One big ‘aha’ moment for me was learning that great leadership isn’t just about being a strong individual it’s also about creating the right environment. I found the idea of Both/And Thinking really eye-opening. Instead of choosing between things like control or freedom or profit or purpose, effective leaders learn to balance both. I also realised how important it is to build a team culture where people feel safe to speak up but are also challenged to think critically - that’s where real innovation happens

Today’s class made me reflect on how real leadership goes beyond KPIs and strategies, it’s about building something meaningful. I learned that innovation can only happen when people feel psychologically safe to speak up and experiment, and that purpose isn’t just a fancy statement—it needs to guide decisions and behaviours daily. What really stood out was the example of Patagonia, showing how a strong sense of purpose can drive both business success and social impact. I’m still thinking about how leaders can hold onto that long-term vision, especially when short-term pressures are so high.

A key takeaway for me was recognising the value of networking. This was highlighted in class as one of the five 'discovery' skills that define an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset. While I’ve always understood that connecting with people who hold different perspectives can broaden my thinking and enhance my ideas, I hadn’t fully appreciated how this is key to having an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. Seeing it framed in this context made me realise that networking isn’t just about career opportunities, but is also a powerful tool for learning and ideation. Moving forward, I’ll make a more conscious effort to engage with others, especially those outside my usual circles, so I can expand my thinking and support my growth!

What I learned in this lecture is that the Padlet discussions highlight critical leadership themes in social entrepreneurship, emphasizing the balance between mission-driven purpose and financial sustainability. Key takeaways include the effectiveness of bipartisan leadership for leveraging diverse perspectives and cooperation, and the importance of leaders strategically prioritizing values/skills when building teams. Discussions around the Robin Hood Army underscore its innovative zero-fund model, which succeeds by fostering intrinsic motivation and collaborative action—though fundraising remains a noted challenge. Broader leadership insights stress the paradox of balancing social impact with operational processes, empowering communities through purpose-driven innovation, and recognizing that transformational change ("the spark behind lasting impact") stems from empathetic, socially conscious leadership adapted to local contexts.

In this lecture, I learned how leadership in social entrepreneurship can look very different from traditional models. One example that stood out to me was the Robin Hood Army. Instead of relying on big donations, they used a zero-budget, volunteer-based model to tackle hunger. Their simple but powerful mission brought people together and showed how much can be done without money just through shared purpose.

What I found most interesting was how they tapped into people’s intrinsic motivation. Volunteers weren’t paid, they genuinely wanted to help. It made me realise how effective grassroots action can be when driven by values rather than money.
