- Sam and Lige are teasing Matt Bonner about his mule. This mule is old and on the brink of dying.
- The mule often gets lost and is very thin, eventually the Mayor Joe buys the mule from Matt for a total of five dollars. While Matt is sad at first, he says that it does not matter that he sold him off because he is bound to die anyway and would be of no use.
- The mule is then free to roam the town and Joe lets the mule be. The mule did eventually dies under a tree and there was a funeral held for the mule in which it is taken to a swamp and then left there, Joe says some words about it. 
- More over we get a lot of insight into the relationship that Janie has with Joe. 
-With the characterization of Joe, the reader can see that he becomes jealous very easily, and expects Janie to be submissive to his every command. Janie does not however, and this eventually leads to Joe hitting her.
-Daisy Blunt, she supposedly has many guys who go after her.
