Phonemic Awareness: Mystery Bag

Put items in a bag that follow the consonant, vowel, and constant pattern (dog, cup, cat, sun, etc.). Have students pull an item from the bag without showing it to the rest of the class. Once the student has seen their item, have them turn to the class and say the word in segmented sounds. The rest of the students will be asked to blend the segments and say the complete word aloud. This activity helps students practice segmenting words' sounds while reinforcing their ability to combine them to form a whole word. Research conducted in 2022 indicated that teaching phonemic awareness to children of different ages and abilities can have a positive impact (Rehfeld et al., 2022). The key outcome measures of segmentation and blending showed significant improvements as a result. The activity can be differentiated to support students with exceptionalities by providing a flashcard with the word of the object they pulled on it. This visual will help them see what words to segment and blend, making the activity more accessible for all learners. This activity can be done in pairs if non-verbal students are in the class. A verbal student can verbalize the sounds they hear while their partner identifies the word.

Make donut forms out of pool noodles. Choose a noodle of a different color to stand for a vowel and one for a constant. On every donut shape, write a few letters. Provide each kid with a suitable surface to lace the donut shapes. Then, have them arrange the noodle pieces and spin them to form new words. To help kids with spelling and phonics, have them read out loud the words they make. Students will be actively involved and have fun while learning phonics with this engaging hands-on game. This game can be made accessible for students of all abilities by providing visuals for students that show pictures of words they can spell with the noodle pieces. Rather than having students with exceptionalities read the whole word, start them off by asking them to say the phoneme associated with one letter at a time. This will help build their confidence and gradually increase their ability to spell words independently.

Phonemic Awareness: What Doesn't Fit?

What Doesn't Fit?: Three flashcards will be provided to the students for this exercise. One flashcard won't rhyme, but the other two will. It is the student's responsibility to determine which flashcard does not rhyme. The teacher should read the cards out loud to the class to ensure everyone can hear the noises. Students can work on their phonemic awareness using this exercise, which teaches them to recognize rhyming pairs and differentiate between similar sounds. Students build phonemic awareness through rhyming because it teaches them to identify patterns in language and the connection between sounds. By including pictures for each word on the flashcards, this practice can be modified to accommodate exceptional learners. People who have trouble processing sound may find this helpful. If students were given two words instead of three, they would need to identify whether the words rhymed. This makes the game easier for pupils to learn about rhyming words since they don't have to figure out which words don't rhyme. To help pupils better recognize rhyming patterns, you might underline the suffixes that rhyme with the words. Students with exceptionalities may find it easier to concentrate on the sound components of the task with this adjustment.

Get the class to identify words from the materials that begin with a specific sound by saying a phoneme aloud. You can give your kids prefix, middle, ending, and suffix sounds to find as they go along. One way to differentiate instruction is to provide students with word lists that, when given a phoneme, can lead them to potential words to search for.

Each student will get one word with its written definition and three images to go along with it. After reading the definition, they must select the image most accurately portrays the word. They will be asked to write the word with the picture that matches the definition once they have found it. By associating words with visual representations, this exercise aids learners in enhancing their vocabulary recall and comprehension abilities. Students are also encouraged to think critically because they must examine the definition to find the right fit. Several modifications can make this exercise more suitable for students with exceptionalities, considering their specific requirements and strengths. People with reading or processing disabilities can, for instance, receive definitions as recordings. One alternative to having students write the vocabulary term is offering a pre-written version corresponding to the meaning and picture. This modification can help students not yet comfortable with spelling or writing independently. Students won't have to worry about spelling or writing words if they have this choice.

Advanced readers develop confidence from peer modeling and improve fluency by reading aloud (readwritethink.org, n.d.).

Ask your child to make up an extended version of a story after you read it to them and see if they can imagine what might happen after the conclusion. Ask them pointed questions like "Where is the next story going to take place?" or "What do you think the main character is going to do next?" invite your kid to explain concepts if they are still working on their writing; if they enjoy writing, ask them to illustrate their predictions in a drawing.

A whole area of this website is dedicated to resources that help with reading comprehension in early childhood education. Children can improve their reading comprehension skills by watching the site's read-aloud videos, which include actual individuals reading stories and asking questions as they go. Moreover, the website provides parents with videos that present concepts for understanding activities they may play at home, like sight word bingo. There are options in the array of resources from pre-kindergarten to second grade suitable for students at any learning level.
