Who- Vietnamese Citizens, American Citizens, Vietnamese Soldiers, American Soliers
What- The war had a negative impact on the soldiers and others effected due to the mental problems they encountered during and after the war. The soldiers who were in Vietnam fighting, experienced and saw many things many people cannot handle emotionally and mentally. After the war many of the soldiers experienced war syndrome and PTSD, C.B. states that, “Battles inflame thoughts of imminent death or impending injury, so the trauma of war becomes firmly embedded into ones consciousness”( 18). Many doctors could not understand the concept of war and what the soldiers have experienced, they diagnosed the soldiers with ‘common characteristics’ such as fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, sleep disturbance, forgetfulness and impaired concentration (Yams 399).
When- 1954-1975 (this was only Vietnam war, however the effects of war will last for a lifetime)
Where- The soldiers were from many different places, however the dominant places were Vietnam and America.
Why- American veterans were sent to Vietnam, some against their will, to fight for south Vietnam. Many came back with mental health issues such as PTSD, depression and sleep disturbance etc., the effects of the war and the ones who experienced it cannot always handle what they have seen, they have seen friends die, crew mates die, and who knows what else. The soldiers experienced many things that we could not handle.
