Conference-Style Induction for Postgraduate Students

🛎 Arrival & Welcome
Students were greeted at a welcome desk staffed by our Admin Team, where they received name badges and a conference-style goodie bag containing key info about the university and school services (student support, careers, Uniskills, and contact guides).

☕ Refreshments & Meet the Team
Students signed in, collected their agendas, and enjoyed welcome tea, coffee, water, and biscuits. PG teaching staff and the School Management Team joined students informally before the day began.

🎤 Opening Session
The event was chaired by our Associate Head for Research, who formally welcomed students to the school and set the tone for the day.

🍽 Networking Lunch & Speed Networking for Postgraduate Students

Over lunch, students had the chance to chat informally with staff and peers. The Management Team and PG teaching staff were available throughout, offering a relaxed space to ask questions and build connections over a buffet lunch.

After lunch, students joined programme-specific welcome workshops to meet their programme leaders and receive their Unicards.

This was followed by a lively speed networking session, where students rotated in pairs around the room, chatting for 3 minutes at each table using prompts like:

Introduce yourself
What sparked your interest in the programme?
What do you wish you knew more about?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The day closed with a plenary led by Prof. Richard Parrish, who encouraged students to make the most of the support available throughout their studies. (School of Law and criminal Justice, September'24)

Departments can adapt this activity to include photo challenges, quick questions, and visits to key locations such as Student Admin Building, the Catalyst Helpdesk, the SU Building, and more.

A great icebreaker that encourages teamwork, builds confidence navigating campus, and sets a positive tone for the week!
