The development of 'Ellis Island'

Ellis Island started off as an island from 1892 to 1954 - this was the start of America’s largest immigration centre. 450,000 people were process in only the first year but then the big building was burnt down in 1897 along with most of the immigration records. The ‘6 second medical exam’ was the first check up on the immigrants - looking for visible illnesses. The people who did not pass this test were marked with chalk and needed a ‘full physical exam’ but those people who did pass were able to go through to the ‘Great Hall’ - it was quite a large room. They were then allowed to live wherever they wanted - one third stayed in the New York area and the rest scattered all over North America, it was later used for a detainment centre during World War 2 - was then shut down after the war but has now reopened for the public as a museum.

How and Why is NYC nicknamed the ‘Big Apple’?

New York is actually America’s top apple grower but the name ‘The Big Apple’ has nothing to do with their great fruit production. Long before New York City was nicknamed the Big Apple, it was actually known briefly as New Orange. In the 1930s, jazz musicians adopted the term to indicate New York City was home to big-league music clubs. A film later came out in 1938 called The Big Apple, filming ballroom dancers in the Swing Era. In a book published the same year, bandleader Cab Calloway used the phrase "Big Apple" to mean "the big town”.

The nickname later faded from use and wasn’t revived until the early 1970s, as part of a tourism campaign to spiff up New York’s image. In the 19th century, “big apple” meant an object of desire and ambition.
