I have noticed that for me finding a balance is what stress me out. Being a full-time student and having a full-time job is not easy. I struggle to spend time with my family and simply take care of myself. I do my best to try to get ahead of my schoolwork, but often times I do it the day it is due. When I feel extremely overwhelmed, I take a walk with my dogs because they always bring a smile to my face.

One can have an emotion-focused, or problem-focused style when coping with stress. One who uses the emotion-focused, controls their emotions through their behavior and cognitive approaches when responding to a stressful situation (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). On the other hand, problem-focused coping is about using the resources or information one may know to help change the situation they are in (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). While there are many ways to help cope with stress, everyone reacts differently due to their behavior and situations.

Everyday in Australia, about 360 people are informed that they have cancer, and this causes many to stress out (Films Media Group, 2016). Those who suffer from a chronic illness can experience higher levels of stress and can make their symptoms worse and even have an increased risk of depression.

One can experience stress from arising conflicts going on in a person’s life, as well as from experiences in the past that later make a person have psychological reactions. Ultimately stress impacts a person’s cognitive, emotional, and social system (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). A person’s memory and attention can be affected when they are experiencing high levels of stress and this affects their cognition. Someone can also display other behaviors like anger or aggression. Just like everyone experiences stress differently, everyone also reacts differently. A person’s self-esteem, intelligence, personality, and belief system are all factors that explain why a person might react the way they do (Sarafino & Smith, 2017). Overtime high levels of stress can begin to affect a person’s wellbeing mentally and physically.

Family to me is very important. My mother can see right through me and know when I am stressed or sad. She is not just my mother but my best friend. She is the person who I go to the most when I need help or a shoulder to cry on. Often times we pray together and do activities to help each other release our stress. I think it is necessary to have someone who we can trust and open up to because it is not healthy to keep bad emotions balled up inside.

There are many websites where one can take a test to try to get an idea of what their stress level might be. One website is Psycom, they have a test called “Am I Too Stressed? (Self-Assessment).” When I took this test, I got little to no indication of high stress. I would say it was fairly accurate because I have learned to cope with my stress. I think if one is not happy with themselves this can cause more stress, which is why I also took the, “How Happy Are You?” assessment. My score was I am happier than average. According to Psycom, those who are happier than average can sit with all of their feelings and can always find the goodness to any situation.

Listening to music is one of the most common things everyone does to release some stress. According to a study done, if people were to listen to music for twenty minutes it could lower someone’s stress level (Linnemann, Wenzel, Grammes, Kubiak, & Nater,2018). Many college students say that listening to music helps them relax and release some of their stress. People connect to the music on a cognitive and emotional level, which is why it can help reduce their stress.
