The two story's connect by showing the common theme of bravery, honor, and war. In the short story Persepolis it's talking about how their is a war going on and some are revolting and others not. Marjane the main character wants to fight back even despise her age, she's still learning about life and is confused. That doesn't stop her from fighting back and showing bravery. The next short poem "If we Must Die" shows unprivileged people who are getting beaten up or tortured by the opposing side. Even through all of this these men decide to revolt and fight back even if it means they will get hurt. These two story's show different sides of the war but have the same common ground, to be brave, have honor, and a war going on.

claude Mckay's poem connect to the themes in chapter 9 is showing fighting back courageously and war. I say this because in chapter 9, 'the sheep', it shows that marji and her family have stayed and wants to see and make a change. while their family and friends have all left to the U.S. this tells me that marj and her family were brave and courageous to stay and fight back to see change. In the poem 'if we must die', shows that oppressed people are getting arrested and getting hurt. But the people who are getting hurt wants to stand up and fight back to die honorably. this shows that it is better to die fighting honourably then just letting it happen.

The two stories connect to themes of being brave and sacrificial in the face of battle. In “The Sheep”, the people who flee the country during this time of danger are seen as cowardly for not sticking with and fighting for their cause. Other people like Marji’s parents remain in their country to see this conflict through and fight it out. In “If We Must Die”, it is expressed that the fight for a cause will be long and hard but if you remain steadfast and brave your efforts will pay off, and it’s better to die fighting than abandon your cause and die a coward. Both show how some people will flee to avoid death and others will know to keep fighting, because if they die at least they will go down honorably.

Claude McKay's poem connects to the themes we see in chapter 9 by showing how you have to be courageous. In chapter 9, it is deemed cowardly that you should try to escape during times of war. There are some people like Marji's father who is afraid to leave but also wants to keep his family safe. A lot of the people that stay behind want the country to change so they are there in support of this movement.

As stateed in chapter 9. In the poem it is talking about sticking up for what is right and that we cant just run and let them continue to treat us like this so he is trying to get the readers to understand that running is not going to accomlish anything but staying and fighting for what is right will help.

There is evidence of this on page 26 panel 7 and page 29 panel 2. One of the themes is that there is danger and corruption in their country. This connects to the poem 'If We Must Die' because the poem talks about corruption. The last 2 lines talk about there being a murderous cowardly pack attacking them.

Both of these passages connect to each other because they are both fighting a greater force and they don't give up and they both have the theme of no matter the circumstances you should never give up. In chapter 9 people were killed and imprisoned but they never gave up on their mission and in the poem they are trying to fight for equality against a way bigger force but they never give up. In the poem it says "Though far outnumbered let us show us brave," shows that they are heavily outnumbered but that will not stop them and in the sheep they are fighting against a whole country and with only an army of missionaries. Anoosh says "everything will be alright" which shows us that no matter what happens they will keep trying. In conclusion they are both fighting for freedom and are up against a bigger rival but they both wont stop till they get what they want which supports both their themes of no matter what circumstances you should never give up.

In chapter 9 "The Sheep" and the poem "If We Must Die" there is a connection between the theme, "Even if outnumbered and against an unbeatable force fight honorably and never give up" In chapter 9 all of the people against the former government that was in power were either murdered or executed, "Its Moshen he has been found drowned in his bathtub" but Marji and her family have not given up on their cause. In the poem the speaker says "Though far outnumbered let us show us brave". This means that even though he knows they are outnumbered and will probably die in he process they wont give up and will be brave and honorable. Both the quote from the chapter, that shows the force (the government) killing the people against it but those still alive never give up and the quote from the poem that shows that whilst outnumbered they still fight honorably and bravely connect to the main theme of both of the passages.

For example, in the poem 'If we Must Die,' line 7-8 says "In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!" this quote shows that even if they lost they wanted to lose with grace so that their enemies would have to respect them. In Persepolis page 30 frame 4 Anoosh has been imprisoned, while he is obviously upset he was imprisoned he is trying to inspire Marji and encourage her to seek change. Both the poem and Persepolis help show the determination people had to create change in their community.

One quote that evidently compare the two stories is first from 'The Sheep' starting with "The Proletariat shall rule! Its's Inevitable!!! That's just what Lenin explained in "The State and the Revolution". This means that Uncle Anoosh believes to fight for the majority of the Republic for the beliefs of Lenin. This ties directly to McKay's 'If We Must Die' quote of "Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, and for their thousand blows deal one death-blow! This quote means that even out-numbered in the revolution against the people who suppress him and his people, they must be able to show courage to fight back no matter the numbers.

Marji's dad is angry that the government is lying to them, but Anoosh thinks that it is fine and will all work out. despite all the pressure to do otherwise, Marji's dad decides to keep their family in Iran and continue fighting when he can.

Claude McKay's poem connects to the themes we see in chapter 9 by explaining that you must fight in something you believe in even if you are outnumbered and it does not look like you will come out the victor. This is shown in the poem when it says "Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,

Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!" This quote helps illustrate the theme to fight back. Also in chapter nine this theme is shown in the book when it says "But you'll see! One day the proletariat will rule!"

The theme shared between George McKay's poem and chapter 9 is resistance. Neither party is willing to go down with out a fight or honorable victory. In the poem, the speaker describes a scenario demanding justice, "If we must die, O let us nobly die,So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy." In the same way chapter 9 introduces a new character that fled from Iran in order to protect himself and others from authorities that sought him. He later was captured and taken to prison, although he endured many years in prison he still came out on the other side fighting. In both instances these two parties were not going to bow down to their enemies, instead they were prepared to do whatever it took fight nobly and without reproach.

In the poem the author writes, "Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,

Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!" This shows how they weren't going down without a fight. In the poem "We Must Die" the speaker portrays a life learning lesson of dying with nobility. He believes in fighting with all you got so if you do lose the battle at least you went down honored and ready. And in Chapter 9, "The Sheep" , it talks about standing up and not letting anyone get the best of you no matter where you are in life, you have to fight for what's yours even if that means taking risks.

The poem, "If we must die," connects to chapter 9, "The Sheep," by understanding that both text is about fighting and dying in a nobly and honorable way. In the poem, line 10, "though for outnumbered let us show us brave." This indicates that they would continue to fight no matter the cost and if they were to die, they would die with bravery and honor. This connects with chapter 9, "The Sheep" when people like Marji's uncle would sacrifice and fight for what they believe in. They would go through hardships but even after everything, they won't stop fighting for what's right.

As the story progresses, their identity pushes them to continue to fight their government in small ways. For example, she talks about how people who supported the government dressed and behaved, versus how people who didn't dressed and behaved. She then shows, through out chapters 10 and 11, that her family dressed like people who did not support the government. Another example is how she behaves at school. She says that she and her friends made fun of her teachers so much that the parents were called to the school.

The theme of identity is beginning to play a role in the story beacuse people are telling Mariji what to do and she doesn like it. Mariji is just now starting to form her own opinion and ideas that make her think about the world in a differnt way. So Mariji thinks that he should be able to dictate what she wants to do and how she wants to do it regarding her family. For example she wants to leave her home and go live somehwere else to where there is no more trouble but her family thinks differnt. Mariji just wants to be heard and not be tould to do something that she doesnt believe in.

In the story, the theme of identity is starting to play into the story with her family’s connection to their country and their political activism and beliefs. The family has faith in their country, identifying as proud citizens of Iran. Marji and her mother are also embracing their identity as strong women who will defend their rights. Marji is beginning to shape an identity for herself as she grows older and more aware, taking part in demonstrations and using the world around her to shape her set of beliefs. The government is becoming more controlling and oppressive against the people in Iran, restricting how people can express their individual identity, and people like Marji and her family are trying to fight against that.

The role that the theme of identity is beginning to play into the story is showing how Marji is developing her views of Iran and the revolution. It is connected to the opposition we see in Marji and her parents by Marji and her dad disagreeing about how much there army can still do to fight for Iran. Page 43 panels 6 and 7 are evidence that Marji and her dad disagreed about what they're country still had the power to do. Marji believed that they could bomb Baghdad and thought her dad was less patriotic than her for not thinking that Iran would be able to do that.
