An example that was heavily critisized by the writer, Jonathan Swift, was slavery. He compared Gulliver as a slave when he was caputered outside of Lilliput. During the Enlightenment, they did not dare to stop slavery because they didn't have any natural desire for liberty and were therefore not fit to be free. This is why Gulliver only was allowed small liberties during his enslavement so that the Lilliputs were sure that he was not a threat to society. Which is also what happened during the Enlightenment. 

Gulliver visits four island, which all have different languages, cultures, religions, foods and ways to govern. He sees that each of them work in their own way and that do things the way that benefit their geographical situation and traditions. This is to show the enlightenment thinkers that maybe our way of living is not the standard or the best way for everyone. Elizabeth Bennet, who is the main charachter of the book is a woman who does what she wants, and not what everybody tells her to do. She is true to herself as she only does what she and only she thinks is best for her. She does let other's influence her, but in the end she makes the desicions about her own life. 

She also focuses on reputation. The fact that Elizabeth not really cares about what she looks like and for example walks in with a muddy skirt. A woman is expected to look and behave certain ways, and Elizabeth does not really care, and can sometimes even be rude. 

This is why her books can fit into the Enlightenment, because of the way she desribes Elizabeth as a strong woman who thinks independently and has other goals than just marrying and having childeren.]]> 2018-11-08 12:47:00 UTC https://padlet.com/emilykccasteleyn/qgonb13gbz3j/wish/302010322 Robinson Crusoe emilykccasteleyn https://padlet.com/emilykccasteleyn/qgonb13gbz3j/wish/302010424 Robinson Crusoe is a typical book to depict how Enlightenment thinkers thought about strange societies. There are many examples of how a white man mistreats a man of color, just because of their differences and the white man thinking he is superior because of it.  First of all, the way he describes Friday’s looks:  “The Colour of his Skin was not quite black, but very tawny; and yet not of an ugly yellow nauseous tawny, as the Brasilians, and Virginians, and other of America are …” is rascist and a typical thought of how a white man would view another person who looked different. 

Crusoe also makes Friday call him Master - immediately putting Crusoe in a superior role and regards him as a servant without asking him. He also has no consideration for Friday’s own culture and way of living, simply teaches him his own. He also takes it for granted that the native will learn his own language, not the other way around; even though he is the one “invading his home”. 

Describes how the west looks upon people that aren't white. It is quite rascist but then again looking at context it was a normal way of treating, and describing humans that were different.

The air is sucked out of the glass jar with an animal inside it. Asphyxiated. The group watching is horrified in the picture. The things that are important are lit. The rest is dark. The father is pointing at the experiment, and pointing at the bird and wants his daughters to learn a lesson. Love is also portrayed and shows that they do not care about the bird only each other. A little boy is watching and wants action. The other man is holding a watch and is stereotypical. Another man is thinking about the philosophical. 

The experiment is not new, it was a 100 years old when painted. Most of the experiments were philosophical. Boyle made the experiment scientific, and wrote it down in a way that enables other people to reenact the experiment 

Darby was the beacon of the industrial revolution in England. Painting was painted by Joseph Wright of Derby.

She focuses especially  on women's rights and that they should have equal rights as men. 

She was harshly critisized for her opinion and was looked upon as very controversial in her time. Nevertheless, she is very important for the beginning of feminism in the western world.

They were rules on hwo to live the best life and how to be the best version of yourself. Some of them were order and sincerity, justice and tranquility. He thought that if eveyrone would live by these virtues, the world would be a better place.

These were very much inspired by the Enlightenment period. The main idea was that everything had to have reason. Relgious tolerance and individual liberty was something that appeared during this time. Still, they weren't very democratic and a larger focus on those with money, than those who needed money. It clearly shows how drinking cheap gin was a big problem. They even show how the pawn shop is next to the liqour store. It shows grufull scenes of dead people being hanged, put in a coffin, impaled, and a woman droping her baby of the stairs. 

This shows how the lower classes were forgotten during this period. That the only thing that mattered was reason, but that didn't count for anyone else than the higher white class.
