"Who do they think they are? Swarming all over the place like they own it. And now they think they can decide where my child goes to school." This shows that even though a "fence" might not be there to keep people out, there still are imaginary fences for boundaries.

"But only because, there is an ocean in between." This is an excellent example of the different types of "fences" there are for people. For this family, the ocean is the fence keeps them apart.

"Live a whole life between, two unyielding and unseen boundaries, until something opens and, reluctantly, we swing out."
This shows that even when we do not realize it, there is fences separating people. It is comfortable for people to stay where they are used to being. When they are forced out of their side of the fence, they are put out of their comfort zone.

Nicholas Sparks is my favorite writer. In every book of his, it has to do with moving to a new place. They leave their known area and make a new fence boundary for themselves. It also has a character finding themselves on the wrong side of the fence, and having to pay the consequence for it.
