Shang dynasty is the first dynasty with written records. Shang were united under the leadership of Cheng Tang. The Shang ruled an area around the Yellow River Valley for around 500 years.

Zhou Dynasty: 1045-256 BCE

It was the longest ruling dynasty in the history of China. A powerful leader of the Zhou named Wen Wang began to plan to overthrow the Shang Dynasty. A lot of the bronze vessels made during this time had detailed inscriptions on them.

700-221 BCE: Warring States Period

During the Warring States Period, Ancient China was divided into several competing states. This period was marked by significant development, including the emergence of Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism.

Confucianism and Daoism Developed: 500 BCE

they originated about the same time. these are philosophies that developed. Daoism, founded by Laozi, represented living in harmony with the Tao, or the fundamental nature of the universe.

Legalism Developed: 250 BCE

Legalism had a large impact on China, especially in the way in which the county was governed. The thoughts of Chinese legalists led to the centralization of power during the Qin Dynasty.

Qin Dynasty: 221-210 BCE

Qin Shi Huangdi becomes the first Emperor of China. He has the Great Wall of China built by extending and connecting existing walls to protect the people from the Mongols. And the writing system of China becomes standardized by the government.

Han Dynasty: 206 BCE-220 CE

The first Han Emperor, Gaozu, establishes the Chinese Civil Service to help run the government. Also emperor Wu defines the Taichu calendar which will remain the Chinese calendar throughout history.
