Judging by how his father states “remember that all people in this world haven’t had the advantages you have had. This tells me that the narrator grew up in a middle class family. Story starts in 1922, Nick Carraway (the narrator) moved east to become a bond salesman. He moves to a place called “west egg”, Long Island. He buys a house next to a mansion that belongs to Gatsby. Nick goes to see his cousin and her husband Tom. Tom seemed to be a respectable person and carried himself like a “man”, which he calls himself. He then meets Jordan Baker, a professional female golfer. His cousin Daisy informs him of Tom's mistress that calls him. Daisy wanted to set Nick up with Jordan. Daisy also brings up rumors about Nick already being engaged to someone back home. Nick returns back to his small home. Tom seems to have a high ego and thinks he is better than everyone. Tom talks as if he is trying to impress Nick. Tom Buchanan looks as if he is healthy and in great shape. Nick thinks Tom is self centered and doesn’t seem to care about the people around him like his wife. When Tom got on the phone to talk to his lover, he didn’t care how anyone felt about it. he colors mentioned in the excerpt are red, white and gold. These colors to me are very exotic and to me represent luxury and “royalty”. The colors gold and red are normally colors you would see worn by kings. These two colors are also used to decorate their castles. Since Toms house is mainly decorated in these two colors we can make the assumption that he has a large abundance of money. Nick lives in West egg where he worked to get to where he is. Tom lives in West Egg and grew up with a lot of money. Tom also goes to New York City to meet his girlfriend even though he is married. He uses an apartment in the city as a getaway place to lay low. Tom acted a lot more differently with his girlfriend than with his wife. Tom actually hit his girlfriend which to me was unnecessary for what she did.. Tom also acts tougher than usual, I’m guessing it is for respect. She expects that every other person to stay out of her way so she can live smoother and more comfortably. It implies that her social class is high so she feels she can do as she pleases. She doesn’t seem to think other people are equal to her simply because they are not as wealthy. She has this sense of entitlement and doesn’t care much for others. Social class is represented by the setting by showing that the wealthy have different viewpoints and attitudes toward life. The non wealthy people live their lives normally and probably treat every person they make with respect. The more wealthy people have large egos and treat everyone who isn’t wealthy like “peasants''. The wealthy act as if they have no care. Mr. Wolfsheim is a prominent figure in organized crime he was responsible for fixing theWorld Series. Mr.Wolfsheim was a gambler and would do whatever is necessary to win. Gatsby may have a deal with Mr. Wolfsheim which is where his money comes from.  Gatsby puts out that he’s a very wealthy man and has many connections with powerful people. Gatsby's manners and the way he carries himself may just be to throw people off. Gatsby also hides his background and personal life so we don’t know much about him. In chapter one im sure this same green light was talked about when Nick saw Gatsby standing outside his home late at night. Nick states that  he sees him reach toward it. What do you think it stands for beyond that? Beyond this I also believe the color green may represent jealousy and envy. How does the color green reflect Gatsby? The color green reflects Gatsbys money and high social position. In our culture the color green usually represents money, sick, nature, and good luck, health, and jealousy. Gatsby has this perfect life with Daisy in his head but his dream isn’t a reflection of reality. I do believe that Daisy loves Gatsby. I do think that Daisy also loves Tom because she did marry him. Tom says he loves her but he wouldn’t have had a affair if he truly did. Nick likes Jordan but I do not think he loves her. I know this because Nick hasn’t really told her anything. I’m sure they both like each other but we will see where the story goes. I think Fitzgerald is stating that love is different for everyone. I think the novel also says the American Dream doesn’t promise to make you happy. The novel also shows that people with money use it to shield themselves from their problems like Tom because after Gatsby’s death the left. Gatsby is trying to obtain the American Dream but he gets caught up in illegal deals and Myrtle’s death. Tom was born into money so the life he lived was already seen as the American Dream by others. Nick is also trying to attain the American Dream and he loses friends and notices the Dream isn’t always obtainable. I believe the American Dream can be obtained by anyone by simply being happy that you are where you are in life.
