Conventions describe the way something is usually done, therefore the conventions of a media product, will be something in the product, that is normally used in the majority of these media products that are made. There are products which share a genre that will focus on similar conventions, however there will also be a few shared attributed that each product will share. For example, a psychological thriller trailer will share the same conventions as a genre just like it, however there may be a few conventions that a trailer of an action film may follow; for example, the use of key characters being shown at the beginning of the trailer.

Why use, develop and challenge conventions of real media products?

Using conventions are important as it means that a media product that I have made, will look like an existing product and that is the whole idea; for the product to be as convincingly real as possible. By using the conventions it can help to justify what exactly the product is and what genre the product is trying to convey. By developing conventions of real media products, it is useful as it helps to show a little differentiation but also adding on to what is already usually seen as a convention of media products. Challenging conventions is very dangerous, an individual cannot challenge too much and make a magazine that is far from what existing products look like, however the products can show that they are different and bring something new to help the genre.

Conventions of Psychological Thriller Film Trailers

Lighting - Low-key lighting is a convention to create tension for the audience.

Shadows - To make an individual seem darker and creates enigma.

Editing - Fast paced cuts are used to create a rush and thrill that the movie should show.

Narrative - What the film is about should consist broken story lines that need connecting and answers being wanted from the audience, this shows an enigmatic approach. The trailer for a psychological thriller should be the same and leave an audience wanting to know more.

Costumes - In a psychological thriller the costumes that the characters wear, are everyday clothes that give a colloquial feel, creating the feeling of pragmatism.

Location - The locations of a psychological thriller film tend to show places such as green lands and parks or city areas near the suburbs.

Sound - There is usually a creepy non-diegetic soundtrack to help build tension and there is also the use of dialogue to help narrate the story to understand the basics of what is happening.

Voiceover - A voiceover to either help narrate the story or further add enigma to the trailer creates the right atmosphere for a genre of psychological thriller.

Intertitles - The use of intertitles lead on to something bad happening or a problem that needs sorting.

Action - The use of violence or crime is used to help establish the genre of the film and distinguish the relationships between the characters in the film.

Conventions of Psychological Thriller Billboard posters

Main image - The protagonist is usually the focus of the poster standing in the foreground and they are usually just head close up shots of the main character.

Tag line - Psychological thriller posters usually have a short snappy tagline that connects with the film to help link the products together and the combination of identifying the film for an audience.

Film Title - The film title is normally the biggest piece of text that is seen on the poster as it wants to be the first thing that attracts an audience along with the main image.

Colour - Usually quite a dark theme running through to give a sense of ambiguity and shows the genre very well to an audience.

Text - There is not too much wiring on a billboard poster, but the name of the film, name of the actors, date of release and the block credits.

Actors names - There is usually a line of actors names either at the top of the film poster for next to the film title. This helps to promote the famous actors who are in the film and could be a reason why an audience would want to see this film.

Quotes and ratings - There are sometimes quotes which have been said from media industries that rate films or ratings from these companies, that help to promote how good the film is.

Layout - A lot of film posters which I have had a look at, have the layout of the title being near the middle bottom of the page, the actors names at the top of the page, the block credits underneath the film title and the main image dominating the page.

Shadows - As psychological thriller is very mysterious and enigmatic, shadows or opaque figures are used quite a lot on film posters, to possibly show the ending existence of a person or even to show that character as being quite dark or scary.

Social Media Reference - Social media has become a big factor in society and another form of being able to promote a product, therefore the films social media sites are sometimes promoted on a film poster.

Masthead - The masthead is usually bold at the top of the page, normal colours for a film magazine include red and blue. The masthead is usually slightly hidden behind the main image.

The main image is a medium close up or close up of the protagonist in the film.

Anchorage Text - The name of the film is usually the anchorage text, and this text is usually in the same font as the films title.

Coverlines - The rest of the main text on the magazine is about other films that are either related to the anchorage film or new and upcoming films that are in the same time frame.

House Colours - A lot of blues, reds, blacks and whites are used to help break up the text and show variety. Bright colours help to accentuate parts of the texts and make some more important than others.

Font - There is a variety of fonts used to help break up different words and different articles that can be found in the magazine, this helps to make the look of the magazine different, by showing a diverse mix of articles.

Pugg - A pugg is normally used to help promote an additional thing inside the magazine, usually something to be won, something exclusive or an extra benefit for the audience.

Banner - A banner can be used in either the bottom, top or both the bottom and top of the magazine to help promote something that is added or the benefits of this particular magazine.

Magazine slogan - A film magazine will usually have a slogan that represents the magazine, this is generally placed by the masthead.

Date, price and barcode - Last parts of a magazine are the little details of the date of when the magazine has been issued, which is normally just the month and the year. The price is also shown next to the date, dependent on how well known the magazine is, will mean a variance in price. There is also a barcode which is placed under or next to the date and price.
