We have also looked into socially constructed beliefs, more specifically, beliefs about people who seem “different”. People who are viewed as “not normal” are often thought lesser of, however, it is society’s constructed definition in the word normal that makes them “different”. While it is easier said than done, making people understand that “different” is an amazing thing and is what makes America what it is today, is important.   • Like Hall, Riggs shows how certain stereotypes sustain in popular culture, well after the abolition of slavery and, later, the right of civil rights movements. Why does he say this is the case, and can you think of any examples from contemporary media and popular culture? (or from the documentary) 
  • Riggs demonstrates the economic and social traps of these representations for black actors and also suggests (as does Hall) that these representations reveal more about those who create and circulate these images than about those whom they (supposedly) represent. In addition, his use of explicit and detailed images of violence challenge any claims that these stereotypes or practices (such as blackface) are without harm.
