Okay, to be honest this is my opinion with understanding language and communication: It's fake! Fine, not really but I really try to understand how do we interpret things that are so foreign to us. "Darmok" reminded me of the modern-day "slang" and mythemes give me that same idea where we figure out underlying 'grammar' based on context clues...

When Picard first arrived on the land with Dathon, it was clear that the communication was the culprit of their mission. Eventually, as the episode went on Picard made attempts at understanding what Dathon was communicating and he officially accomplished it when he realized that Tamarians communicated through metaphors. "With fists closed.

"Picard calls it metaphor, and Troi calls it image. For the Federation crew, the Tamarians cite examples that guide their understanding of and approach to the various problems they encounter on a day-to-day basis: as Picard puts it, by citing “a situation similar to this one.” Science fiction often plays with alternate methods of linguistic understanding, and this is familiar territory: The alien is incomprehensible, but in a way that can be overcome through reason and technology."
