After attending a recent course on empowerment it is now my job to deliver and implement this in my unit. The first part of this is to teach/brief senior commanders what it is and what is expected of them. I have already started developing the lesson and will be delivering it at the start of December. The lesson will fall in the time scale and be delivered to a target audience initially before being adapted to deliver to other groups.

When a job requires any equipment onboard a Royal Navy Ship or Submarine to be isolated mechanically or electrically this needs to be done using the newly revised Lock Off and Tag Out (LOTO) procedure. This safe system of work is under constant review with feedback from users and lesson learnt being used to improve the LOTO system. Training on the subject has had to change over recent years to incorporate al the changes and new way of using LOTO. I propose to improve workplace training with the use of practical demonstrations and scenario-based training on both mechanical and electrical systems, including the administration of paperwork.

I would like to use my training event to introduce these changes to users who are already familiar with how the database works.
I would use an EDIP type lesson format along with a Q&A session.

After having some newly qualified personnel posted into the team it has become apparent that they need some in depth training on project management tools, specifically managing the project file to ensure a common approach to filing and hyperlinking documents within the project log to allow commonality across all projects. This allows handovers of projects to happen efficiently without a loss of production. The lesson will be given with templated documents and use of existing files that follow the correct scheme. they can apply this on their current projects and tasks with reachback to the senior members of the team.

It was recently identified that a piece of test equipment, a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR), is not being used on the Squadron during aircraft wiring fault investigations. Tradesmen are relying on the half-split method to locate wiring faults. The consequences of this are that wiring fault investigations are taking longer than necessary, more electrical systems are being disturbed, and additional maintenance requirement are being raised.
Discussions with the avionics trade desk reveal that the equipment is not used due to a lack of confident/knowledge setting up the equipment correctly and an inability to interpret/understand the results displayed. Further discussions identified that nobody can recall receiving training on the use of this piece of test equipment.
I propose to analyse the training need and design a training program for the TDR that gives users an awareness of how to conduct pre-use checks, set up & operate the equipment, and interpret the results.
