Greek people are among the world’s healthiest people, having one of the highest life expectancies in Europe. The life expectancy in Greece is 83 years, significantly better than the world average of 70.5 years. This is due to their fresh food and vegetables and high physical activity levels.

The health care system

Greece’s health care system was ranked by the World Health Organization as one of the best in the world. The public health care service in Greece is considered underfunded. Hospitals can be overcrowded, hygiene is poor and relatives are expected to bring food for the patient - which could be a problem for a tourist.
In a private health system, conditions and treatment are much better, although much more expensive. This means that a good health-insurance policy is essential.

Greece is a mountainous peninsula located on the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by sea from three sides. Greece & the Greek Islands are known for 3 mainthings: ancient civilization, amazing landscapes and high developed tourism. Greece is so rich in culture and beauty that it never seems to be completely explored, no matter how many times you visit it. The capital city of Athens houses a third of Greece's population. Greek is the only official language of the country. However, a large part of the population, mostly people working in tourism and the younger generations, speak English fluently and occasionally they also speak other European languages.

The hot dry climate of Greece sets the tone for many of their meals. Fisherman catch an array of seafood from the mediterranean sea. Farmers cultivate lemons, eggplant, artichokes and other fresh fruits and vegetables. Although greeks don't eat as much meat s some other cultures, they still create lamb, pork and chicken dishes. As a snack Greeks layer nuts and honey into thin sheets of dough to make sweet snacks. Greek historically has low rates of chronic disease and the highest life expectancy rates in the western world. But today, urbanisations and economic growth have changed the dietary patterns of this country.

The economy has contracted severely since the 2008 financial crisis and has yet to recover. After 2009, household incomes slipped by a third, while 25% of shops in central Athens closed. The unemployment rate in Greece remains very high. Shipping and tourism are the main industries, with tourism accounting for eight out of 10 new jobs. However, Greece has made progress in restoring stability in the economy and implementing much-needed tax adjustments.

The ancient Greeks were great believers in exercise and physical culture. They had many athletic competitions, the most famous of which was the Olympic Games. Data from the WHO Global Health Observatory for the Greek adult population (aged 18+ ) show that 84.6% meet the recommended physical activity levels for health set out in the Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health, with males being much more likely (87.6%) to meet the physical activity recommendations than females (81.8%). Greece does not have an established national health monitoring and surveillance system that includes population-based measures of physical activity, nor does it have national recommendations on physical activity and health
