What stood out to me was that, even though some Assignments are clearly considered less honorable (such as Birthmother), the children accept them without protest or hesitation. This highlights the deep conditioning within the community — no one questions the system or longs for personal choice.

It was also striking that individuals have virtually no control over their lives. They don’t get to choose their Assignments, their spouses, or even their children. Every aspect is carefully decided by the Committee of Elders, eliminating the concept of free will.

When Jonas’s number is skipped during the ceremony, it creates tension and confusion. Later, the Chief Elder clarifies that Jonas wasn’t assigned like the others; he was selected for an extraordinary and rare role: Receiver of Memory. This position is held in the highest regard but comes with great burden — Jonas must carry all the memories of the past, including pain, loss, and suffering, which the rest of the community is shielded from.

These qualities are essential because the Receiver must bear the weight of all memories—both joyful and painful—while remaining mentally strong and stable. The role also involves advising the Elders and helping them make crucial decisions for the community.

In my opinion, this Assignment forces Jonas to carry the immense burden of all humanity’s suffering and pain entirely on his own. He is isolated, never truly understood, because he is forbidden from sharing these memories with anyone.

• Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for any medications.

The last instruction deeply unsettles Jonas. He had always been taught that lying was strictly forbidden, yet now he is being explicitly told he may lie. This revelation makes Jonas question everything he once believed about his community. He even wonders whether other citizens have also received similar instructions. From that moment on, he begins to recognize the extent of control and deception within his society.

On Jonas’s first day of training, he enters a house unlike any other in the community, filled with books. There, he meets The Giver, an elderly man who explains the responsibilities of the role. The Giver tells Jonas that he will transfer to him all the memories of the past, which include both joyful and extremely painful experiences. The very first memory he shares is of sledding down a snowy hill—a moment that introduces Jonas to snow, speed, and pure exhilaration for the first time in his life.

This experience sparks something inside Jonas. It makes him start questioning the world around him and longing for change, realizing that there is much more to life than the controlled reality he has always known.
