" (page #162)
" He had thought of everything but this, that a might come when he would have to see his father. Nothing could have been more unlooked for, more surprising, and, we must say, more disagreeable. It was aversion compelled to intimacy. It was not chagrin; no, it was pure drudgery." (page #164)

Marius is a very prideful character. He refused to see his father, even though they hadn't seen each other in a long time, until he realized how foolish he was acting; the problem was that then he got what he deserved, and felt sorry for neglecting his father for so many years."

VB

CARD #6

" He had but just died... The son also had come too late... At the same time he felt something like remorse, and he despised himself for acting thus. " (Page #166)

After the death of his father, and without having spoken to him for so long, Marius felt remorse and repentance, which is something you would expect from a person who had never acknowledged his father. Every person knows how important a parent is, and though he had abandoned Marius when he was little, he deserved to feel as he did after his father died.

VB
