         <description><![CDATA[<div>Glastnost: <br>Means openness. Reform under Mikhail Gorbachev to create more freedom and openness both socially and politically in the U.S.S.R. Allowed churches to open, released political prisoners, publication of books that had been banned and more freedom in the media.<br><br>Perestroika:<br>Economic, and political reform and restructuring under Gorbachev in an effort to revive the Soviet economy. Move away from a command economy. People were allowed to open small businesses. Goal to retain communism but make it more efficient and productive. Also resulted in limited elections and changes in foreign policy especially in regards to limiting spending on arms.<br><br>Mikhail Gorbachev:<br>General Party Secretary and Leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. Unlike previous leaders, he wanted to move the Soviet Union in a new direction away from a totalitarian state. Pursued both economic and social reforms. After an uprising in Lithuania (a soviet satellite state) in the early 1990s he was replaced by Boris Yeltsin, the first directly elected president of Russia. His reforms led to the breakup of the Soviet Union and eventually the end to Communist Russia.<br><br>When/why did the Soviet Union break up:<br>The once-mighty <strong>Soviet Union</strong> had fallen, largely due to the great number of radical reforms that <strong>Soviet</strong>president Mikhail Gorbachev had implemented during his six years as the leader of the <strong>USSR</strong>. However, Gorbachev was disappointed in the dissolution of his nation and resigned from his job on December 25.</div>]]></description>

         <title>9. Communist China</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Why Chinese communist took control in 1949:<br>In 1945, the leaders of the Nationalist and Communist parties, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, met for a series of talks on the formation of a post-war government. Both agreed on the importance of democracy, a unified military, and equality for all Chinese political parties.<br><br>Cultural Revolution:<br>Revolution led by the Red Guards under Mao. Goal to establish a society of peasants and workers that are all equal. Persecuted intellectuals and artists and claimed they were dangerous. Shut down colleges and schools. Thousands were forced to do hard labor and were executed. Eventually Mao stopped the revolution because he feared another civil war<br><br>Great Leap Forward:<br>Mao's plan to modernize China with a focus on agriculture and industry. Created communes or large collective farms inspired by Stalin's Five-Year Plans.. Strictly controlled life of the Chinese people. Program was a failure and resulted in inefficiency, crop failure and a famine that killed about 20 million people.  Also resulted in break with relations with the Soviet Union.</div>]]></description>

As well goes for Vietnam were two sides were different but this time the communist side had won the whole country not like Korea the country eas split into two.</div>]]></description>
