There are 3 types of feminists: liberal, Marxist, and radical feminism. Liberal feminists believe that equality can be achieved by persuading men to do more housework, bringing up children in non sexist ways and encourage women to have careers. To both Marxist and radical feminists changes won't achieve much because society would still be patriarchal. For radical feminists, society needs to change completely. If relationships are based on male superiority, then women need to stay out of exploitative relationships and live separately from men.

Marxists think families are important for individuals and society. The main function though, is for capitalist society, meaning that the family contributes to the continuation of an economic system.

Functions (according to Marxists):

Each generation socialized into accepting capitalism + its values.
Family brings children to be the next generation of workers -> generating profit for capitalists
Men oppressed at work has rights to vent emotions wrongly
Women's role is to take care of family

Conclusion - Marxists believe that the function of family maintain the capitalist superstructure of society, meaning that they view family as a institution to promote capitalism and maintain its needs.
