Widgets and partial fractions by Dr Maurer

There are some handy widgets available online that will do partial fractions for you. Wolfram has a couple of nice ones. The deal here is that I want you to actually do the work of decomposition into partial fractions. It is a copout to depend on technlogy. Having said that, feel free to use technology to check your work. Be warned, though, you have to do your own work on the quiz!

It's important to not depend on technology for everything. I usually use this site for checking as well. I forgot about partial fractions. The following Khan Academy videos are a great refresher for those of us that haven't done them in 15+ years. I really like doing them, but I really love Algebra.
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-home/alg-rational-expr-eq-func/alg-partial-fraction/v/partial-fraction-expansion-1

I find those online calculators to be really handy but they can also be a bit dangerous. If you rely on the calculators too much then you wont master the material in the same way as if you do the work by hand. I learned that lesson in my Calc 1 class. Still, it is nice to confirm your work.

I admit it takes me more time to figure out how to use the technology than it does to work most problems out on paper. I am still learning how to use the TI-84. I agree technology does not replace the benefits of trudging through a problem.

I have held a paid wolfram alpha account for some time now. It is very useful for checking my work to see if I have arrived at the right answer. And if I didn't get the right answer, it has a feature to show you how to solve it step by step to see where you went wrong. As far as depending on technology goes, that just takes the fun and pride out of being able to say I know how to solve this stuff. Besides, having a good working knowledge of Calculus will aid in some of my other technical hobbies including but not limited to studying physics.

I don't like to rely heavily on calculators and other technology because it hinders me from getting the most out of the concepts. I learn best by working out the problems and to keep practicing. Technology can be useful in checking your work, but that's all I utilize it for.
