Set goals with students: When conferencing with students, it is important for them to know what is expected of them at different guided reading levels. Setting goals is one way to help students take ownership of their learning. They can set end-of-the-year reading goals, as well as benchmark goals, with the teacher.

Personal Reflection on Running Records

Running records are a diagnostic and progress monitoring tool that takes place when students read aloud to us. We take notes and mark errors as they read a text. This assessment focuses on students' strengths and weaknesses, showing us what we need to help them improve on and where they are falling short. There are 3 levels we can rank students on based on their scores, which are independent, instructional, and frustrational. We want to assess students on all three levels to see how they behave at each level. We choose around 100 words for them to read to us. Then, we can score them on errors, accuracy, and self corrections. We can use the data to improve our teaching and create interventions to best help the students.
