Ze liggen heel diep in de zee. Het is dan ook moeilijk om hen te vinden. Vroeger konden alleen de allersterkste zwemmers zo diep duiken dat ze kaurischelpjes konden rapen. Omdat ze zo sterk waren, konden ze ook heel dikwijls duiken en heel veel kaurischelpjes mee naar de oppervlakte brengen.

Die kaurischelpjes werden gebruikt als betaalmiddel. Ze waren heel mooi en heel kostbaar. Hoe sterker je was, hoe dieper je kon duiken en hoe meer kaurischelpjes je vond hoe rijker je dus was. Oude en zieke mensen konden niet duiken naar kaurischelpjes en waren afhankelijk van de jonge sterke duikers (dikwijls kinderen/kleinkinderen) die hen schelpjes wilden geven.

Later ging men betalen met echt geld en had je geen kaurischelpjes meer nodig om iets te kopen. Maar men gebruikte de schelpjes nog wel als een mooi symbool. Als je zo een schelpje aan iemand gaf, wilde je daarmee zeggen: “ik wens je heel veel kracht en sterkte toe”. Ook wel “geluk” en “rijkdom” of “dat het vlug beter met je mag gaan(dat je vlug sterker mag worden, genezen)”.
