The reviews of the song, ‘Same Love’ were very mixed. When the song was released in 2012, it became one of the first songs to embrace same-sex marriage. The NYT reveals that “‘The fact that a song solely dedicated to the message of marriage equality is climbing the charts and quickly becoming a popular song across the country is a big deal,’ said Charlie Joughin, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, the largest gay rights organization. ‘It’s indicative of a changing attitude’”. Since same-sex marriage was not legal until 3 years after, many people were opposed to the LGBTQIA community. 13 years ago, the idea of homosexuality was not as widely accepted as it is today.

The song is a campaign / a stance with same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage was finally legalized on June 26, 2015. The song aired 3 years earlier, on July 12, 2012. They use their first amendment rights of free speech. The song was used widely in activist groups who were “working to pass Referendum 74 to legalize same-sex marriage in the state” , says Grammy awards. Some of the proceeds that were made from the song were donated to Washington United for Marriage. Macklemore and Lambert both actively spoke on the issue of inequal marriages. Both singers continued to fight for the change for same-sex couples and equality for love.

Lambert during the time was known for being openly lesbian. Her line reflects how she likes women, and she can’t change because it’s something she cannot change. Even if she had the opportunity to, she wouldn’t because she is proud of who she is. Her being open about her sexuality gave others the courage to be proud of who they were instead of ashamed. The lines are a great symbol of pride and activism in the community.
