Fire symbolizes chaos fear and destruction. It is also a weird obsession of hers like the time she went to San Francisco and she started lighting on fire paper towels and throwing them in the toilet and nearly burnt the hotel down. She over came terror, homelessness, and starvation. But also it represents he resilience like the time she was getting raped by Billy but she fought back and stood up for herself.

"That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing gum. I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever."

This is order for her because Jeannette says this because at home there isn't much to eat and if there is she has to make it herself is.

"We laughed about the all the kids who believed in the Santa myth and got nothing for Christmas but a bunch of cheap plastic toys. “Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,” Dad said, “you’ll still have your stars."

The reality of this is that Rex is teaching his kids that Santa isn't real and toys are just a temporary and the kids will forever have their stars that Rex gave them. Also, Rex didn't give give his children anything because he doesn't have any money to buy gifts. But, it is a fantasy because you can' t physically own at star.

"Dad wasn’t telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert."
The fantasy about this is that Rex will never have the Glass Castle built. Rex will say these thing because he wants his kid to think that he is this great guy and he means well

After Rex comes home one night, he tells the family that it's time to "skedaddle". At this time two things happened Jeanette forgot her Tinkerbell doll and they didn't want to return to get it which made her super sad but they prefered to leave it. Right after Rex stopped the car and grabbed the cat then tossed it out like they have before with other cats. Even after getting rid of her pet that she was using for comfort while they were leaving their home , Jeanette still looked up to her parents and loved them no matter what.
