The top five qualities I admire in others is perseverance, hard work, drive, competitiveness, and focusing. I admire these traits when I see them in others because I know it is hard for me to do some of these on my own. I struggle with staying focus, especially on tasks I do not enjoy but have to do. For example I get easily distracted if I am around friends but have to focus on a certain assignment of mine. However it is easier to focus when we are all on task and focused.
One of my role models is my good friend named, Julian. He does what is needed to be done whether it is fun or not and he pushes himself to take everything serious. He has the drive to stay fit, smart, and wants to improve at what he does. He inspires me to push myself, work as hard as I can, and to test myself. He is the same age as me and I try compete against him in many things but he usually has the upper hand because of the dedication he has put in to improving at things like school, football, and extracurricular activities.

Coalwood is a small town in West Virginia with a community church, community school, and a mining shaft. The town also includes Homer’s house which has a rose garden in the front yard. The house is located 100 yards away from the mineshaft which is pretty close. The mineshaft has an entrance and and an exit it is also company owned and many people have jobs there, however the coalmine does pollute the air. The mineshaft is connected to Main Street which homer drives down to hand out the daily paper to his neighbors. The road leads to the Church where Richard preaches. Richard has helped Homer with many things and helps Homer when he needs it most. The school that Homer goes to is outside of the town and has many more kids going there then the amount that live in Coalwood since the school pulls from other towns.

Sonny is in a conflicted relationship with his parents, Elise and Homer Sr. Elise encourages Sonny to build a rocket, but with an intent to prove that Sonny is not a failure. This is not the support that Sonny wants, but he realizes that it is the only support he will get. However, Homer Sr. is neglecting his son’s passion for building rockets, more interested in his brother, Jim, who is a gifted football star. “I knew Dad thought about Jim all the time, was always telling people what a great football player my brother was, and how he was going to tear up the world in football when he went to college (Hickam 43).” This drives Sonny more than anything else to prove his dad wrong and show that he can do something important. So when he wants to thank Mr. Bykovski for the help in building the rocket, Mr. Bykovski responds by saying, “ ‘You want to thank me.’ He nodded toward the box. ‘Make these fly. Show your dad what you and I did together’ (Hickam 97).” This shows that even Mr. Bykovski knew that Sonny wanted to prove his dad wrong so it had to be a big deal to him and have a lot to do with what he thinks the role of family is about. He thinks that you have to prove your worth to your family or you might disappoint them.
