This was an excellent way to start the course. I am so glad the attitude gap was touched on. I feel a major issue facing our students in the role of the hidden curriculum in our urban schools. Our students can see what condition(s) schools and materials are in. This in turn impacts their view on education and their own personal value. Principal Kafele touched on so many key ideas and topics, I hope to cross paths with him again.

The best thing I've heard in awhile regarding the best way to get people to truly understand how they can be a part of change...you have to look at the history (true history) of any situation. Once this is looked at and understood, then empathy sets in. If we truly seek to understand others then we have laid the foundation for there to be trust, sharing, true relationship and a place where people can move forward together; but it all begins with looking back into the past.

Our struggle to engage in Social Justice education must be fueled by us knowing why we teach in the first place. We must identify our own personal philosophy of our role as educators. If we view this endeavor only as “time served” towards retirement with benefits, and we ignore the human factor of the community we serve, then we essentially have chosen the wrong profession and a stealing our pay. It becomes exponential difficult to fully engage in Social Justice pedagogy when working in a climate that does not espouse it. It seems that education-reform must be system-wide and pressure has to be places on districts to ensure that social justice pedagogies are embedded in the operational framework of all schools.

I loved how he didn't just talk about the same awesome Activists that our systemic institutions allows history teachers to use in their curriculum. He gave us a great road map to share with our district, building principals, classroom teachers, etc.

I was so estatic when he said that all teachers should be incorporating Black History in the classes. I would take this a step further, I feel that whatever population our building posits should reflect staff, curriculum that reflect the different races that we have in our classrooms.
It was an honor to hear such a distinguished leader share his journey, his beliefs, his knowledge w/ us.
