Abolitionists, Protests, Slavery leading to Violence in 1850s

It began when a massive amount of 11 million enslaved Africans were transported. Thus, starting the the first human rights campaign on the slave trade. On June 17 of 1783, the first anti-slave trade petition to Parliament and it was signed by 273 Quakers. The abolitionists aimed to get their point across to the public the horrors of the slave trade.

"Campaigning against Slavery." Campaigning against Slavery. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Oct. 2016.

Violence of slavery protests began in Kansas of the 1850's since many settlers began pouring in from both the southern states and northern states. This caused conflict between the pro and anti slavery groups. An example that demonstrates this is the "Sack of Lawrence", a violent attack against a town that was an antislavery foundation. This then set off a series of brutal manslaughter across the states. Just like the "Pottawatomie Massacre" in which John Brown, an American abolitionist, kidnapped five pro slavery men in their sleep and beheaded them for revenge of the "Sack of Lawrence". This cycle of killing went on-and-on leading to the cause of the Civil War.

Littell, McDougal. McDougal Littell the Americans. Evanston, IL: McDougal Littell, 1998.

Free African Americans and white abolitionists created a secret network to get slaves to freedom. Harriet Tubman was one of the famous conductors that worked in the underground railroad. She saved 300 slaves and took 19 trips back to the South.

Littell, McDougal. McDougal Littell the Americans. Evanston, IL: McDougal Littell, 1998. Once the slaves were past Canada they were free from slave hunters. Those who assisted in rescuing slaves were former slaves from the free black community, philanthropists, church leaders and Northern abolitionist.

History.com Staff.

Black Lives Matter is a movement from the African-American community that fights against violence and racism towards black people. This movement is controversial because people believe that black people are trying to say that their race is more important than anyone else. However, they are trying to convey that they are just as important as everyone else. They do not get the same respect from society and the government, which is why this movement was created, to end the violence and racism towards them.

"Black Lives Matter." Wikipedia.
