In my opinion, Grendel is the perfect representation of the villain's journey. Grendel starts out by wondering who he is and if he is worth something. The is able to adapt to new things, figures out internal challenges, and finally gets an understanding of himself as a "monster". He goes from being the monster stuck in a tree to when he returns after he is defeated by Beowulf. He does show the journey steps of a villain.
