I used this as a chance to ask them about their project as well as what other projects and papers they had going on outside of my class. We are committed to the ongoing work of anti-racism and we ask you to do the same. To move forward, we must acknowledge the role that designers have contributed to the creation and perpetuation of unjust systems and institutions. We also realize that this work takes time and sustained involvement; let us all work together and approach new knowledge with a learning mindset. We have identified specific areas that we are committed to making change (see below) and would also like to encourage you to collectively generate a set of principles that you can hold yourselves accountable to during the semester. Here is a list of potential guiding principles that you can adapt or build from.



This is an initial list of our action items that we are committing to uphold throughout the semester:

  • Including references from underrepresented and overlooked designers and illustrators to broaden the canon of existing eurocentric examples we already have access to. 
  • Reimagining ways that we can continue to adapt the nature of project prompts by providing more opportunities for students to engage with topics that center their lived experiences and the complex narrative of the world that we live in.
  • Challenging harmful stereotypes not only in the work we produce, but also in the expectations of the kind of work we produce.

Another direct way that we want our commitment met with action is through participating in the AIGA Design Educators Community's “Value Design Education Pledge.”  (Links to an external site.)We pledge to be responsible to society, our students and profession.
