Health Care - Mia, Jack, Jake

Health care is a system implemented into society to assist and support people's health needs. This can include, but is not limited to, health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Views on health care over the years have changed, and conservatives, liberals, and libertarians all view this policy differently. For example, conservatives believe that the broken health care system can be fixed through the promotion of competition between health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, reforming the Medicare payment system, establishing clearer standards of care, and ending the "lottery" court system by capping damaging awards offered by activist judges. Furthermore, they believe that healthcare should be focused more on senior citizens. On the other hand, liberals believe that everyone has the right to free healthcare and fight for a single-payer health care system similar to those in the UK and in Canada. Opposite of these, the Libertarian belief is that everyone should pay for their medical costs themselves and shouldn't rely on someone else to pay their fees.

Luca,Dina,Alex

Liberal Perspective: Liberals generally advocate for a more cautious approach to defense spending. They may support a strong national defense but often emphasize diplomacy and international cooperation as primary means of achieving security. Liberals are often concerned that excessive military spending can divert resources from social programs and essential public services. They tend to scrutinize defense budgets and prioritize investments in areas like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Conservative Perspective: Conservatives tend to be more supportive of robust defense spending. They often view a strong military as a fundamental component of national security and a deterrent against potential threats. Conservatives may argue that cutting defense budgets could undermine the country's ability to protect its interests and allies. They tend to prioritize military readiness and technological advancement, viewing these as essential for maintaining a strong defense.

Libertarian Perspective: Libertarians, while also valuing national defense, are typically critical of excessive defense spending and government involvement in military affairs. They argue for a more limited government role and reduced military intervention abroad. Libertarians may advocate for reducing the size and scope of the military and emphasizing a non-interventionist foreign policy. They often see military spending as a potential source of government waste and advocate for fiscal responsibility.

Inheritance tax: Liam, John, Kate

Inheritance tax is the tax paid by the heirs of a deceased relative or friend. The tax is levied by the state, taking a portion of the money or assets left behind by the deceased and it is paid by the inheritor. Conservatives would most likely push to keep the inheritance non-taxed, since it is not income and may be labeled as a gift. Liberals, on the other hand, are more hands on with the Economy. Liberals would most likely prefer to spread the wealth and collect the taxes on inheritance, in order to expand the government's role. Libertarian's are completely against the governments over-reaching in any monetary policy, and would not approve of the taxing on inheritance assets.

What is Income tax - Income tax is a tax on the gross salary of an individual or businesses earned in a financial year. It is generally imposed by the state in which the income is earned and used to fund public services, pay government obligations, and provide good citizens.

Liberal Perspective: The liberal party believes that the collection of income tax will help better the American economy. However, they do believe that those with a higher income should pay a larger portion of their income tax compared to others. They wish for a simpler tax system and for once that eases the burden of taxation.

Conservative Perspective: Conservatives believe taxes should only raise the needed amount of money to fund a government function, which results in the least amount of damage to the economy. This is why they believe income taxes at every level of income are too high, mainly for those who are earning a lot.

The Libertarian Stance: Libertarians are proponents of liberty and freedom. Under this ideology, it is believed that Americans should have the freedom to do what they want with what they have–this especially includes their income. If an American wants to donate some of their income to the government, then they should be free to do so; the inverse also applies. Libertarians are against government intervention in the free market, and their definition of government intervention includes forcing citizens to pay the government a portion of their income.

An income tax is referred to as a “flat tax” when all taxable income is subject to the same tax rate, regardless of income level or assets.

Liberal views oppose flat taxes due to their belief in progressive taxation, which imposes higher tax rates on higher income individuals. They argue that flat taxes disproportionately benefit the wealthy and contribute to income inequality. Liberals advocate for higher tax rates on the wealthy to fund social programs and government services.

Conservative views may support a flat tax because it aligns with their preference for a simpler tax system. They argue that a flat tax reduces bureaucracy, promotes economic growth, and creates a fair system treating all taxpayers equally. However, opinions on the specifics of a flat tax can vary, with some preferring a hybrid approach or including deductions for specific expenses.

Libertarian views strongly support a flat tax as it achieves a simple and fair tax system, aligning with their emphasis on minimal government intervention and taxation. They argue that a flat tax minimizes government intrusion and reduces the burden of tax compliance. Some libertarians may even favor more extreme forms of taxation, such as consumption-based taxes or complete reduction of government involvement in taxation.

Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Utah use a flat tax system ranging from 3-5% tax rates

The federal relief is currently providing an additional $300 benefit per week. The longest that you can be unemployed in Illinois as of 2023 is up to a maximum of 26 weeks.
