You all need to have different questions even if you help each other.

Step 4: Submit your annotated articles and worksheets.

Source #1: “Looks Great, But Is It Really?”

Achieve3000 News Article - July 18, 2016

TOKYO, Japan (Achieve3000, July 18, 2016). Just imagine: You're watching film footage of a 3 forest. You glance at a tree, and it comes into vivid focus, the background dimming slightly. Or maybe you're playing a video game. You shift your eyes slightly to look at a character, and it begins speaking to you. You may soon be able to have these experiences, thanks to new eye-tracking technology . Excited? Many people are, but others have expressed concerns that 4 the potential risks of such technology outweigh its benefits. 5

The new eye-tracking technology was developed by a company called Fove, which was started in 2014 and employed 17 people as of March 2016 in its offices in Japan and the United States. The technology works through the use of a large headset with goggles that cover most of the user's face. Inside the goggles is a computer display screen. Tiny sensors monitor the 6 movements of the wearer's pupils as he or she looks at the screen. 7

The eye-tracking technology is designed to be used with virtual reality—or "VR," as it's known in the industry. VR is a computer technology that delivers a 360-degree, computer-generated, fictional universe. By simulating8 the user's presence in the artificial scene, VR can make it seem like the person is actually there. When a user lifts his or her hand, for example, the simulation of the user on the computer screen lifts its hand. Fove's eye-tracking technology is designed to improve the illusion by reacting to where the user is looking. 9

"It allows you to go inside the world that's behind the display," said Fove's co-founder and chief executive officer Yuka Kojima, a former game producer for Sony Computer Entertainment.

VR could revolutionize entertainment, including movies, video games, and live-streaming of sports. The technology also has numerous potential business applications. It could give apartment hunters a virtual look at real estate options and allow car buyers to tour virtual 1011 showrooms. In addition, the technology could prove useful for training pilots and surgeons. It would enable them to attempt risky moves without putting people in any danger.

3 footage: cinema film showing a particular event

4 eye-tracking technology: technology within a headset that follows eye movement to direct it 5 outweigh: to be more important or valuable than something else

6 sensors: equipment used for discovering movement

7 pupil: the small black round area in the middle of an eye

8 simulating: creating the look or feel of something

9illusion: something that looks or seems real but is not

10apartment hunter: a person looking for an apartment to rent

11 real estate: property in the form of land or houses

Page 2 | SUHSD ELA 8 Semester 2 Argumentative Performance Task 2021

New technology usually has its share of detractors, however, and VR is no different. Some 12 people worry that it could negatively affect a person's health. There have been reports of people experiencing nausea after wearing VR headsets. In addition, doctors have voiced 13 concerns about people looking at screens that are situated too close to their eyes.

Critics of VR technology are also concerned about its fans becoming so immersed in their fantasy environments that they become detached from reality. These critics fear that users 14 will

begin to ignore their real-life responsibilities, like caring for pets or going to school or work. But Fove developers argue that VR can play a positive role in people's lives. They point to potential applications of the eye-tracking technology to illustrate their point.

In one demonstration, Fove shows a bedridden grandmother using the eye-tracking headset 15 to "attend" her grandson's wedding. Unable to be at the event in person, she sends a robot controlled by her eyes in her place. The woman happily reaches out as if the newlyweds are 16 standing before her.

Fove's other co-founder, Lochlainn Wilson, foresees the technology enabling people with disabilities to use their eyes to control devices they wouldn't otherwise be able to. As an example, he described a time when a young man with spinal muscular atrophy (an illness that had weakened his arms and fingers) used eye movements to play a piano."We want to do things with VR that people haven't thought about or have thought to be impossible," said Wilson.

Like it or not, VR is likely to become more widespread, and it seems only a matter of time until the eye-tracking technology is part of it. In 2016, Fove had plans to produce 1,200 headset kits. Kojima said the company might boost production to as many as a million headsets if she 17 clinched a deal to supply them to Internet cafés. In addition, Fove was offering to license the technology to other companies. Meanwhile, Facebook's Oculus and the U.S.-based Eyefluence Inc. said that they were also developing eye-tracking technology for VR.

12 detractors:one who criticizes someone or something

13 nausea: a sick or uneasy feeling in the stomach; a feeling that you may vomit 14 detached: separated; not connected

15 bedridden: unable to leave your bed, especially because you are old or ill 16 newlyweds: a couple that was recently married

17 boost: to increase

Page 3 | SUHSD ELA 8 Semester 2 Argume
