A smile can show you are engaged in conversation and are a light hearted employee with a positive attitude. No one wants to hire someone that has an unpleasant facial expression. I have a hard time remembering to smile when engaging in a conversation so this is most important for me to remember.

Professionalism

It is important to dress professionally for the role you are applying to. Not only does this mean clothing but also appearance. Some jobs have policies that prohibit piercings, unnatural hair colors and tattoos. Make sure your hair is appropriate for the job you are applying to.

Hand Shake

A hand shake is an interviewed first impression. A good sturdy hand shake can show you are confident for the role you are applying for. Although job interviews are stressful ensure that your palms are not sweaty as that can show you are nervous which can imply you are inexperienced.

Eye Contact

Eye contact shows that you are engaged in a conversation. I have always struggled with eye contact as it can be awkward but it is very important to remember to show you care about what the conversation is about.

Head Cues

Nodding along to a conversation can show interest and understanding. I have always nodded along whether it is in class or in a more relaxed setting. I notice that the speaker always looks to me when they are speaking to a group because I appear the most concentrated on what they are saying.

Body Language

Body language is incredibly important in a job interview. Crossing your arms can show you are closed off. I often cross my arms in conversations because I do not know what to do with my hands. During a job interview it can come off as rude. Placing your hands in your lap can also allow you to fiddle with something discreetly while coming across professionally.
