Walking can contribute to both fat loss and building lean muscle, though it's primarily known for its fat-burning benefits. To effectively leverage walking for both, you need to focus on intensity, frequency, and potentially incorporate resistance. Walking builds slow-twitch muscle fibers, which are good for endurance, and also burns calories, contributing to fat loss.

Walking safety concerns include being struck by a vehicle, falls due to uneven surfaces or hazards, and potential exposure to crime or hazardous weather. To mitigate these risks, walkers should be aware of their surroundings, observe traffic rules, and take precautions like wearing bright clothing, using crosswalks, and avoiding distractions like cell phones.

To lose fat through walking, aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week, or 250 minutes for more significant weight loss. This translates to about 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Also, you should aim for a brisk pace that elevates your heart rate. This means walking at a speed where you can comfortably talk but not sing. A pace of 3.5-4 mph or 4-5 mph is a good target depending on your height and how you walk.
