The donkey, the man and his son

This story is inspired by a popular Nigerian musician, Ebenezer Obey.

A man and his son were travelling on a journey, so he bought a donkey. Horses and donkeys were a means of transport back then, today’s equivalent of a car.

The man was old and frail, years of battling the sun strokes and dust devils had taken its toll.

This journey was a vacation, a reward for his years of labour. The father and son were excited to spend some bonding time together.

The old man got on the donkey since he was older and weaker, and they began their journey, with the son walking alongside him. They were suddenly accosted by someone who said to the father, “Lazy old man! How dare you allow a little boy to walk under the blazing heat of the sun?”

The old man got off and put his son on the donkey. As they continued their journey, a passerby said loudly, “What a foolish old man! Do you want to die in the heat while your son who is youthful and stronger rides on the donkey?” So the father got on the donkey as well.

As they rode through a village, they saw a crowd of people who yelled at them saying “Those two heartless riders are trying to kill that poor donkey.” So they both got off, and walked alongside the donkey and continued their journey.

As they approached another village, they overheard the loud whispers. “These two must either be retarded or slaves to a hard life, walking alongside a perfectly strong animal, when they can ride on it!”

The father looked at his son and said: “There’s no wisdom you can apply, there’s no moral conduct you can portray, there’s no path you can take, that will ever satisfy the people of the world.”

This story was told in an old song by Ebenezer Obey, a Nigerian JuJu musician titled Ketekete. The twenty-minutes long song is a wry description of different life scenarios that illustrate the truth that you cannot live your life to please people no matter how hard you try. There will always be differing opinions on how things should be done.

ID- P339071
Name: Elizabeth Oluwatobi Idowu

Once upon a time, in a small town in Manchester, England, there lived a young boy named Marcus Rashford. From a young age, Marcus had a passion for football and dreamed of one day playing for Manchester United, the biggest football club in the world. But little did he know, he was destined for so much more than just being a footballer.

Growing up, Marcus faced many challenges. His family didn't have a lot of money, and sometimes he went to bed hungry. But he never let that stop him from chasing his dreams. He worked hard at his football, spending countless hours practicing and perfecting his skills. And his hard work paid off when he was signed by Manchester United at the age of 18.

As Marcus's football career took off, he began to realize that he had a platform, a voice that could be used to make a difference in the world. And he was determined to use that voice to help others.

One day, Marcus learned that many children in the UK were going hungry during school holidays because they didn't have access to free school meals. This touched Marcus's heart, and he decided to do something about it. He used his platform to speak out about the issue and to raise awareness. And then he took action.

Marcus worked with a charity to provide meals to children in need during the school holidays. And when the government refused to extend the free school meals program, Marcus didn't give up. He continued to speak out, using social media to reach millions of people and to put pressure on the government to act.

Marcus's voice was heard, and the government eventually relented, agreeing to extend the free school meals program. But Marcus didn't stop there. He continued to use his platform to fight for social justice, to advocate for children, and to stand up for what was right.

Today, Marcus Rashford is not only one of the best footballers in the world but also a role model and inspiration to millions. He has shown that one person, with a passion and a voice, can make a difference in the world. And he has proven that true greatness isn't just about what you achieve on the football field, but also about the impact you have on the lives of others.

Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1833. His father, Immanuel Nobel, was an inventor and engineer, and his mother, Andriette Ahlsell Nobel, was a writer and artist. From a young age, Alfred showed a keen interest in science and engineering, and he would often conduct experiments in his father's laboratory.

As a teenager, Alfred attended private schools in Stockholm and then went on to study engineering at the Polytechnic School in Paris. In 1859, he began working for his father's armaments factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. There, he developed a new type of explosive called dynamite, which revolutionized the mining and construction industries.

Although dynamite brought Alfred great wealth and success, he was deeply troubled by its destructive uses in warfare. In 1888, his brother Ludvig died, and a French newspaper mistakenly published Alfred's obituary instead. The newspaper described him as the "merchant of death," and this deeply affected Alfred, who was forced to confront his own legacy.

Determined to leave a more positive mark on the world, Alfred rewrote his will to establish the Nobel Prizes. These prizes, which are awarded annually, recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace.

Alfred Nobel died in San Remo, Italy, in 1896, at the age of 63. His legacy, however, lives on. The Nobel Prizes remain one of the most prestigious honors in the world, and Alfred Nobel's invention of dynamite continues to be used in peaceful applications such as construction and mining. Alfred Nobel's life reminds us that even the most successful and wealthy individuals can make meaningful contributions to society and leave a positive legacy.

The Greedy Tortoise

Once upon a time, there was a clever tortoise. This tortoise had made friends of which many were birds.
One day a party was organised far in the sky, and many birds were invited.

In preparation for the party, the birds arranged a meeting to discuss about their journey. The tortoise was invited to attend the meeting because of his close friendship with the birds. On realising that the party was going to be a big one, the tortoise also became very eager to accompany the birds.

But he was told that the party was going to be up in the sky. This was sad news for him because the journey involved flying, and he had no wings. Still the tortoise insisted on going. He asked his friends, the birds, to lend him some feathers. These would enable him to fly with them to attend the party.

After a long negotiation, the birds agreed to lend the tortoise some feathers. But there was one condition: the tortoise had to return all the feathers to them after the party.

The tortoise was very happy with this arrangement. Before the meeting ended, he proposed that for convenience, the birds and himself too should assume new names. These were the names which they would use at the party. All birds agreed with the idea. And immediately they began to give themselves new names. The tortoise was the last to give himself a new name. And being a cunning animal he called himself For All of You.
The birds agreed to set off for the journey early in the morning at 6:00 a.m. Being anxious to go to the party, the tortoise attempted three times to wake up the birds to start journey, well before the agreed time. Each time, the birds refused to wake up and told him to go back to sleep.

At 6:00 a.m., the tortoise went back to his friends and they all set off for the journey. It had been estimated that the journey would take two hours, but it took them three hours. The delay was caused by Tortoise who could not fly as fast as the birds because he was not used to flying. He was also afraid that his borrowed feathers might fall off if he tried to fly faster.
At last he and his bird-friends arrived at the place in the sky where the party was to be held. And they were warmly welcomed. A big breakfast was prepared for them. But before it was served, the visitors; that is the birds and the tortoise, wanted to find out for whom among them the breakfast was going to be served.

When they asked the host this question, the answer was “For all of you.” This meant, according to their assumed names, the tortoise. The tortoise therefore ate all the breakfast alone while the birds watched.

The party continued and the time came for lunch. The birds thought that since the breakfast had been for the tortoise, lunch would be for them. But still, they wanted to find our for whom the lunch was going to be served.

This time the lunch was served by a different host. “For whom is this lunch served?” the birds asked.

The lunch is For All of You,” the second host replied. This meant that once again the meal was for the tortoise.

The birds got annoyed but remembered that they were visitors, from far away. They allowed the tortoise to eat the lunch alone again.

At last a quarrel broke out when evening tea was also served “For All of You!” The birds felt hey had had enough.

They had starved the whole day because of the tortoise’s greed. As a result they asked the tortoise to give them back their feathers so that they could fly back home to eat and drink. The tortoise tried to apologise, but they could not forgive him. They removed their feathers from him and flew away.

Before the birds flew back home, the tortoise told them, “Please pass by our home. Tell my mother to put a heap of rags on the ground, in front of our house. That is where I will land, so that I don’t hurt myself.”

When the birds reached his home they told the mother to put big stones on the place where the tortoise was going to land.

The tortoise descended from the sky at a terrific speed, and landed on the stones. His coat broke into many small pieces.

Fortunately, he didn’t die. His mother treated him by stitching the various pieces of his broken coat together.

Since then, the tortoise has remained with scars and a patched coat. This was as a result of his fall from the sky.

All this happened to him because of his greed.

ID- P344080

Name: Ilyas Adigun

Ever since I was a little boy I've always been compared to my great grandfather as I reminded my whole family of him in multiple different ways. I was told I look very similar to him and that my actions somewhat resembled his. This got me thinking and I decided to learn more about him by asking my family questions and having them tell me stories.

One of those stories really stuck out to me as I had a huge fear of elevators as a child and even though he was a war hero this was the only story I always thought of. He was in Egypt in a really large building a pretty long time ago ad he was in around the 22 floors when the elevator stopped and the lights went

out.

He had no way of escape and at the time technology wasn't good enough for him to have a way to call for help, but he didn't give up. He climbed the wall using the handle and opened the top of the elevator and that's when he realized that none of the elevator doors were open and again he's left with a dilemma of how to escape.

This is what I can't forget about the story. He used the ropes of the elevator to climb up till the thirty-two floor because that was the roof. He gets there and while holding on to dear life he kicks down the door and escapes into the roof top of the building where he left using the stairs. He would not have been able to accomplish any of this if it weren't for his fearlessness and war skills. All of this and he still used elevators on the daily. This caused me to remember the story whenever I was afraid of getting in an elevator until I came over my fear.

For my story telling I would like to talk about my grandfather (Izodovich) because he had so much influence on me. He is a high school graduate. He always told me that he went to school with a one pen and a one piece of paper and an eraser. He always used the same paper with erasing his old work and kept adding to the paper. He told me that he had to shepherd the sheep after school. Because his father had animal husbandry. He told me that these years he went through were the hardest of them all. Because after Turkey invading the Cyprus made Bulgaria thing they were the next on the line so they discriminated the Turks lived within Bulgarian borders or If you had enough money you could change your Turkish name to Slavic version of it. After graduating high school, he joined the BCP (Bulgarian Communist Party)

So, he joined the several coups and went to prison for several year but within his imprisonment the government changed regime. So, he is set to be free. Because he was a BCP member he gets renowned by the others and becomes a governor years later. So, he gains several lands and goes on making agricultural gains. But he always left culture sick because his name getting changed made him angry. But after year later with a one guy named Naim Suleyman. My grandfather helped him a lot to become a professional heavy lifter. But Naim was angry to Bulgarian government and always wanted to compete for turkey because he was Turkish and getting a medal for a country that discriminated him means a nothing so my grandfather helped him with being the voice of Turks within Bulgaria. So with the voice of Naim winning a medal Bulgaria gave back their giving name and let the Turks be known within the country. But whenever I asked him the question “Have you ever felt like giving up”

He gives me this answer: - It is your choice, my child. You would rather choose your life story become a tragedy or comedy. And with Naim and I had a lot of fun

But always within his voice that life is harsh sound comes to my ears but you will go through the hardest times .when he finishes his sentence

I can hear that accomplishment in his voice.

I used to think that no one can be happy unless if they had achieved their goals or had like a future vision in their mind that they wanna make it come true , so one of the goals that 15 years old me thought about was to study abroad since no one has ever done it in my family nor even thought about it before, I knew it’s a hard goal that needs alot of planning, thinking, hard working to achieve and my parents approval , so for three years I worked as hard as possible that every time I think of giving up I just take a second to remember what all this hard work is for , and luckily my hard work made it come true , but then I started looking at life in a different way, I started thinking “ is this all I ever wished for? Was it worth all the hard work I did to achieve this? Wouldn’t it be better if I didn’t move out at all?” So I started getting homesick all the time wishing that I gave myself more time to think about it rather than daydreaming about it in an unrealistic way , until I realised that it’s the small things that make life exciting , in life we all have our ups and downs not everyday is fun ,there are some days when you’re sad and you never know why , but these are the day that makes you thankful for the basics happy days

In 2019, American hip-hop artist Playboi Carti, also known as Jordan Carter, created a record label by the name of Opium. Hailing from Atlanta, Carti made a name for himself with his first two studio albums, Playboi Carti and Die Lit. In both albums, Carti built a lighthearted style, utilizing surface-level lyricism and an addictive flow. He created a cult following, amassing millions of listeners and pairing up with another talented hip-hop artist and Philadelphia native, Lil Uzi Vert. This partnership had massive commercial success, but the pair’s relationship slowly faded after Die Lit was released in 2018.

In December 2020, the highly anticipated Whole Lotta Red, Carti’s third studio album, finally dropped on Christmas morning. The album was heavily aggressive, filled with loud 808s and homicidal lyrics. The album art was a nod to the popular rock band Slayer. Carti’s style had entirely changed from nonchalant, upbeat, and relaxed to murderous and extremely energetic. With 23 credited producers, Carti had no shortage of production quality and help. One producer, though, was able to captivate audiences and make a name for himself after the release. F1lthy, a Philly native, is the producer responsible for some of the most memorable (and streamed) songs on the project such as Rockstar Made, Stop Breathing, and On That Time. Adding on to the mound of production assistance Carti received, Whole Lotta Red was executively produced by Kanye West and included features from massive names like Future, Kid Cudi, and West himself. Surprisingly, the release induced mixed results among his audience, with some hailing the release as the best trap album of all time, while others hated the repetitive lyricism and “lackluster features”. Despite these claims, Carti and his label’s popularity skyrocketed through a massively successful tour, merchandise, and social media presence. In fact, it seemed that over time his audience had grown accustomed to his new energetic style.

In 2019, before Whole Lotta Red’s release, Carti signed an unknown Atlanta native, Ken Carson, and two years later, another Atlanta native, Destroy Lonely. These two artists have taken the rock-rap, aggressively toned “rage music” and elevated it further. Lone and Ken continued to place beat selection and energy at forefront of their style, supplementing deeper lyricism and themes. Since 2020, Carti is yet to drop any music and has stayed quiet, with only a rumored album and a clothing line. It is truly his label that has kept his name alive and well within the scene. Ken Carson dropped his breakout album and second studio release, Project X, which had decent underground success and hype. Ken’s energy and incredible production brought the young artist into the limelight and set his next album’s release up perfectly. After singles and teasers, Ken dropped his most recent project, X, on July 8th, 2022. This album significantly elevated his status in the scene, but beyond that, Ken showed the world just how much energy can be expressed with beat selection and production alone. The songs are noisy, with bass and 808s booming, and when combined with his harsh lyricism, Ken creates a rageful and energetic album. X, and Ken himself, really blew up when a dance trend on TikTok was made out of his song, “Freestyle 2”. This rise in popularity brought the label more hype and fans for its next release.

On August 12, 2022, Destroy Lonely dropped his 3rd studio album, No Stylist, (disregarding </3², a deluxe release) to commercial success. The album changed Lonely’s bright keyboard beats into thoroughly mixed, synth-filled tracks with a wide variety of samples and a feature from his contemporary, Ken Carson. Every song title is condensed, skipping vowels and making each word uppercase, perhaps to emphasize the loud and rageful nature of each track. Although these releases were met with criticism from reviewers and older hip-hop fans alike, the Opium label has amassed a large and dedicated following who value the energy of the music over its lyricism. Carti, nor his label mates, truly promote or advertise their music in any substantial way. They simply amassed such a large audience just by staying quiet and having word spread by mouth. This lack of advertising and the overall nonchalant nature surrounding their music’s popularity gives Opium an interesting and esoteric nature. Even without advertising, Carti has puppeteered his style and experimented with his label’s signees, and he has set himself up perfectly for his heavily anticipated fourth studio album. With its dark and grungy aesthetic, Opium is only growing with possible new signees and projects on the horizon, and I for one will be listening along through it all.

P402290
Yasir Alfadel

In the sunny city of Quimper, in 18th century France, lived a young boy named René. He lived happily with his mum, dad and younger brother Michaud. He spent his days joyously gallivanting around the city with friends as any young boy would.

However, little René’s world was flipped upside down when he lost his beloved mother to tuberculosis. This left him and his brother in the care of their profligate father who had little concern for their wellbeing and interests.

Despite this unfavourable challenge, René would not be deterred. In the midst of the French Revolution, 12-year-old René moved to the port city of Nantes to live with his uncle, who was a dean of medicine at a university. There he began his journey into the world of medicine.

René was privileged to work at a hospital before formally begin his study of anatomy in Paris at the dawn of the 19th century. He was guided by mentors who were some the of the most well-renowned medical professionals in European history.

After graduation, he continued his research and worked as personal physician for the French ambassador to the Vatican in Rome. The consequently conservative views expressed in his medical journals brought him much criticism from his professional contemporaries. During this time, René sadly also lost his brother and uncle to tuberculosis. These challenges, though discouraging, would not avert him from his pursuits.

In 1816, René began working as a physician at a hospital in Paris. There, inspired by his personal experiences with the disease, he sought to find a more efficient way to diagnose people which such internal illnesses as tuberculosis. The usual method of putting one’s ear against the patient’s chest was not always effective and occasionally brought embarrassment.

Inspired by the long hollow tubes schoolchildren played with, and influenced by his hobby of flute playing, René designed a long hollow tube of wood to use in his work. It was made of three, detachable parts and had a plug in it to amplify sounds. With this tool, he was able to more accurately listen to sounds from a patient’s chest.

And so the stethoscope was created.

René’s invention greatly changed the medical profession. It enabled him and others to further research into many other diseases, information which has been continually developed so as to be useful for us today.

Later on in his life, he got married and lived happily with his wife although the could not have children. He continued his work until he was faced with the oldest enemy he knew - tuberculosis. Ironically, René was self-diagnosed with his own invention and knew he would shortly die which he did at age 45.

René’s life albeit shortened, was fruitful and revolutionary. His story lives on and inspires us to persevere in hard work no matter what challenges we face.
