Hideki Tojo was the prime minister of Japan from 1941-1944. He was known to be an aggressive militarist during his lifetime, especially during his leadership. Soldiers under Tojo were forced to kill themselves rather than be caught. This was seen as a sign of respect to the emperor and this practice of suicide instead of surrender continued throughout the war. Japan was allied with fascist Italy and Nazi Germany during Tojo's rule, creating the axis powers. Japan and the United States entered WWII with the Japanese attack on Peal Harbor.

Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi Party and the dictator of Germany from 1933-1945. Hitler had extreme prejudices against Jewish people and an outrageous sense of nationalism for Germany. He believed that Germany should be "pure" and that all German speaking countries should be under German rule. Hitler was known for his lack of keeping his word, especially the part where he promised not to invade more countries. Laws against Jewish people became more and more prominent during this time until it eventually lead to their mass encampment and genocide. WWII started when Hitler sent troops to invade Poland and disrupted years of appeasement.

Erwin Rommel or "the desert fox" was in Germany's army during WWII and commanded Germany's defense against the Allies when they were trying to "invade" northern France. Rommel rose in rank in between and during WWII in part because he had a reputation of being a "superior military instructor," but also in part because he had a close acquaintanceship with Adolf Hitler. He was later believed to have been plotting to assassinate Hitler, but Hitler didn't want people to believe that anyone, let alone a popular general, would oppose him. Hitler gave Rommel the option of suicide rather than a public trial and Rommel chose suicide.

This battle was considered an important turning point for the Allies. The battle was defensive on the Soviet Union's part with Stalingrad being the name of a Russian city. Germany was invading this city because it produced artillery for Soviet troops and because it has an important shipping route, the Volga River, running through it. Invading the town would also provide Germany with some powerful propaganda because the name of the city contains the name of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin. Over 2 million people, including many civilians, were killed or injured during the fighting. Russian forces were able to use their knowledge of the land against the Germans and form a defense around the city that also essentially forced German troops into dealing with Russian winter. "The loss at Stalingrad was the first failure of the war to be publicly acknowledged by Hitler. It put Hitler and the Axis powers on the defensive, and boosted Russian confidence as it continued to do battle on the Eastern Front in World War II" (History Channel).

The Battle of Midway was between the United States and Japanese Navies. Japan wanted the United States to have less power in the Pacific and wanted to use Midway as a base to attack Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately for Japan, the United States had been working to break Japanese communication codes and found out about the battle beforehand. This led to the United States being more prepared than Japan was ready for which was a deciding factor in the outcome of the battle. "This critical US victory stopped the growth of Japan in the Pacific and put the United States in a position to begin shrinking the Japanese empire through a years-long series of island-hopping invasions and several even larger naval battles" (National WWII Museum in New Orleans).

This was one of the last battles of WWII. During this battle, the Soviet army slowly took over the entire city of Berlin by attacking from all sides. The German army was weak and consisted mostly of boys from Hitler Youth and old men, but they fought hard. Soviet casualties were over 80,000 and German casualties were over 50,000. Hitler could see that the battle, and the rest of the war, were not going to go how he had planned, and so he committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin.

Uncle Sam, the man in the picture, represents the United States as a country. So with all that in mind, this propaganda poster is one of the more self explanatory ones. It is just saying that the country needs/wants help with the war, and one of the best ways for civilians to help with war is to enlist in the military.

The Navajo people that were a part of this group used their everyday language as a code to send messages to other Navajo Code Talkers who could translate the message to the Allied forces. Other countries had no idea what the language was and couldn't translate it because it wasn't a written language and only the Navajo people knew it. "The Navajo Code Talkers were treated with the utmost respect by their fellow marines. Major Howard Connor, who was the signal officer of the Navajos at Iwo Jima, said, 'Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima'" (CIA). "Boys practiced military drills and learned to handle weapons. They also worked on farms in the summer and participated in competitive sports, especially boxing. President Harry S. Truman approved the use of this bomb, the use of the first atomic bomb for a list of cities that had been picked out based on their military, political, or historical significance. On August 6, 1945 "Little Boy" was dropped on the town of Hiroshima and killed almost 80,000 people instantly. A lot of Allies were happy about the attack because it meant that Japan was going to surrender, it wasn't until later that we really saw the devastating effect it would have on everyone in Japan.

They ended up taking Manchuria because a Japanese owned railway was bombed and the Japanese blamed the Chinese. It is also said that they probably planted the bomb themselves just so they would have reason to invade Manchuria. The people in China were not prepared for the attack and lost the region completely after a few months. This is part of what led to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This night was sponsored by the government and planned by Adolf Hitler and other Nazi Leaders. They wanted to make it look like a bunch of just everyday people in Germany really hated Jewish people. Hitler Youth members were also invited to destroy Jewish communities. "In the hours and days that followed, organized groups of Nazis wreaked havoc on Jewish life in Nazi Germany. During the riot, local Nazis set hundreds of synagogues on fire. They vandalized thousands of Jewish-owned businesses. They desecrated Jewish cemeteries. They broke into homes, smashed furniture, and terrorized Jewish families. Following orders given by Nazi leaders, police forces and fire brigades did not intervene to stop the destruction. Policemen did not protect Jews or their property. Firemen did not put out fires in synagogues" (Holocaust Encyclopedia). It was also common practice during Kristallnacht to beat Jewish individuals to death. Hundreds of Jewish people living in Nazi Germany at this time died.

After the British government said that they could no longer provide financial support to the governments of Greece and Turkey, the expectation to provide was passed to the United States. Both Greece and Turkey had failing governments and America felt that the loss of these countries would make communism spread even more. This idea was brought on by Undersecretary of State Dean Acheson who called it the "domino theory". President Harry S. Truman brought up the issue in a joint session of Congress and asked for $400 million to help Greece and Turkey economically and militarily. " This doctrine and the related 'domino theory' would guide U.S. foreign policy around the world for the next 40 years. President Truman declared, 'It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.' The sanction of aid to Greece and Turkey by a Republican Congress indicated the beginning of a long and enduring bipartisan Cold War foreign policy. Future presidential administrations would use similar reasoning to justify actions in Korea, Cuba, and Vietnam, among others" (National Archives).
