Appearance is how something appears to be. You can use appearance in context of a lot of things such as senses, emotion or to generally describe what something appears to be. Eg. She appears to be afraid of bugs🐛, The British Empire appears to be the most powerful empire🇬🇧, he appears to be rather handsome🤭 Appearance can also be easily changed by an event or action. It is something that can be superficial, ie have a deeper meaning or not be true until closely examined.

Disguises are how you deceive people, how you appear to be what you are not, how you basically trick people, usually into thinking that you are greater/different than you actually are. Disguises are methods of trickery and deception. There are many types of disguises in the world, too many to count. At some point in their life, many people have used disguises. Well, I'm almost 100% sure everyone has. They lie, cheat, for their own benefit. However, disguises are never perfect: there are cracks in them, small cracks, smaller when you get better at disguising yourself. Those cracks are the key to revealing the true person behind the disguise, revealing what they are behind what they appear to be.

How do the characters appear in Heroes (in general)?

I think the characters appear to be quite simple, with only a few goals at the time. They seem to get along with each other very well, with little to no conflict between them, at least at the start of the book, and before the terrible thing happened to Nicole Renard. They seem like normal people, living a normal life, travelling together, happily, along the road of life. They have their ups and downs, but nothing too extreme. Then that falls apart. It turns out, the road of life had a massive hole in it. And into that hole they all fell, going down and down, and slowly climbing their way back out. This climb was in no way easy, and that tore apart their disguises, revealing them, as they truly are. Revelations are made, later in the book, revelations that tear apart their bonds, and send them down different paths. The appearance of each character also changes, from young, innocent, and happy to more resigned, more mature in a sense. Some characters even go from seeming like a kindly mentor to being a villain, making the audience hate him.

All characters in all books have different appearances. There is what seems to be the protagonist, deuteragonist, antagonist, love interest and mentor in many good books. These positions can be altered through an event or action. Multiple roles can be taken up by a character. For example in the book 'Heroes', Larry LaSalle is the mentor but later becomes the antagonist through a terrible event.

Disguise is the act of masking the truth through alteration of appearance. It has played a big role in making books interesting and is widely included in many popular books. William Shakespeare popularised adding the act of disguise into literature and writing and used it in many of his famous plays and literature. In the context of the book 'Heroes', Larry LaSalle's evil personality was masked by the idea of him being a mentor and helping everyone.

Appearance and Disguise - Larry LaSalle

Larry LaSalle first appears to be the mentor of not just the protagonist but many other named/unnamed characters. He was a professional dancer, baseball player, table tennis player and most importantly a war hero. He was the owner of a Silver Medal of Honour and was the cause of Francis going to the war. Later finding out that it was to kill himself. Slightly towards the end of the book, there is an event that completely changed the way we look at him as a character. Many hints of his true personality are stated throughout the book, foreshadowing more as it got closer to the event. This shows us that in a good book, there are always twists and turns and is interesting to search for hints that foreshadow what is yet to come. It also tells us that even though a one time action, our views on a character, in this case Larry LaSalle, can change dramatically.

Appearance and Disguise - Francis

Francis is, in this book, quite a straightforward character. His emotions are expressed clearly, as are his intentions, seeing as he is the protagonist, a character that is usually quite revealed in the book. He, when in the past, seemed quite innocent, but the future him leaves a lot to be answered, or so at first. As the book progresses on, those mysteries are slowly solved, his secrets, his motives for what he thinks, what he feels are revealed. His character becomes unraveled. He has few disguises, but his trauma of the terrible event is clearly shown, as he is trying to hide from what happened, after it happened.

Appearance and Disguise - Nicole Renard

At the start of the book, Nicole Renard appears to be another simple character. However, even from the start, she seems very mysterious, a bit larger than life, because of Francis' admiration for her. However, it is that admiration that made him not truly understand her, and is arguably the reason why that terrible thing happened. We also only see the good things about her, and that continues until the end of the book. She seems like a character we will never fully understand. There are not many examples of disguise of Nicole in this book, other than the disguise that she wore to cover up what happened, but that was for other people's sake. I think that this may be the case because Cormier needed Nicole to be the innocent character, the character that had been wronged greatly, the character that would touch the reader, make the reader pity them, and to show the terrible consequences of that horrible act.

PEDAL Paragraph 1 -

I think that Appearance and Disguise could be presented in this book through hinting at something not right, or small cracks in the disguises that are not present in what is the truth. Some of these hints include the foreshadowing, the hinting of something bad to come in the book. These quotes may be for instance: "It's still a bad-luck place", "But he still beats up children in the schoolyard", and maybe "lured", are small hints, so small the reader might not even detect them, but they are still powerful foreshadowing nonetheless. The verb "lured", for instance, might pass off as another alternative to "brought", but "lured" gives a more sinister feeling, possibly foreshadowing the events to come, "luring" the kids just as how he "lured" Nicole and Francis into trusting him, and that trust led to the terrible event. These small words and phrases might symbolise something much bigger: the cracks in a mask of deception, the disguise being the happiness, the truth being what Larry LaSalle truly is, the darkness that no one can see through the light, the brightness that was the promise of success. This could symbolise the war, how the leaders of each country made the soldiers think that they were fighting for a worthy cause, when in reality the war was useless.
