In The World to Come, Dara Horn grabs and keeps her readers' attention by having the first person she introduces them to, a sad and quiet guy, do something really out of character - steal a priceless painting from a museum. Then, she steps back in time to tell the terrifying story that connects the thief to the painting he stole. She also keeps things interesting by mixing historical characters (like artist Marc Chagall) with fictional ones, and adding a little magic, too! If you like historical fiction, you will like The World to Come.

In the 3rd book of the Death Note Series, authors Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata gets the readers attention with a cat and mouse chase of 2 geniuses of Death Note wielder/murderer, Light Yagami and the detective Ryuzaki, aka "L" who can solve any mystery. The Death Note is a journal where a name written in it will die instantly depending on the details before their death. In book 3, they come across each other at their new university where L gives Light an opportunity to help him work on the secret task force while also telling him his identity. Light takes it to give himself access to police information but not to reveal that he is Kira, the person behind all the murders. But Light cannot write Ryuzaki's name because he doesn't know if the person who he might know is L is his real name. The only way to see someones REAL name is with the eyes of a Shinigami (original death note wielders) but loosing half of their lifetime. Now that Light and Ryuzaki are acquaintances, they would each have to outsmart each other in the case of Kira.

The Bermudez Triangle is a book written by Maureen Johnson, that follows the lives of three high school seniors, Nina, Mel, and Avery. She makes the characters likable by making the book seem very realistic. Each girl has her own thoughts and feelings about each other and about High School, and the book is very easy to connect to. Also, the personalities of each girl are unique, but yet easy to like because you get to know them very well. For example, Nina cares deeply about her friends, even when they turn on her or do something to upset her. This make me like her because she is a kind hearted person, and a good friend. Mel is kind of shy, but also is a very caring girlfriend and friend. This makes me appreciate her character more because I can relate to her, since I am shy too. Avery is the most outgoing in the group, and is not afraid to speak her mind.

It opens with a description of Jamie, the main character, and her way of life. Immediately after that, the mystery comes into place. This keeps the reader intrigued because the reader can make predictions about what is going to happen next and be completely shocked about what happens instead. There are a lot of intense and mysterious parts in this book that keeps the readers interested. This novel is more like a mystery book and those kinds of books interest me as a reader.

Both the narrator and her love interest have some form of cancer, but this doesn't stop them from doing and getting what they want. For example, they take the opportunity to travel to Amsterdam together to meet their favorite author, even though the trip could have dangerous consequences. They also both choose to fall in love even though it is very likely that either one of them will die from their sickness. In these ways, the characters take charge of their own lives.

How does the author maintain reader's interest?
Frank Herbert maintain’s the reader's interest throughout the book by having the story follow many characters. In the book, after the death of the Duke, all of his family, and colleagues are into hiding on a desert planet. It follows many different groups of characters with an interwoven story. It maintains interest mostly by changing perspective between characters who are trying to survive in the same place, but don’t know that any of the others are alive. This makes it especially interesting when 2 characters are having completely different experiences and then they bump into each other and both their stories collide. It also switches to the perspective of some villains, so you know what's going to happen to the protagonists before they do, which can create a lot of anticipation, which makes the reader keep wanting to read.

“The Hours”, by Michael Cunningham, is a novel about three different women, living at different times and places, trying to find a meaning to life. The author maintains the readers interest by always making the stories even more intriguing... Slowly, we start to realize that all of their stories connect, and, as a reader, I cannot wait to see it unfold. I didn’t know much about Virginia Woolf’s life and it has allowed me to understand and learn about it ( although it might be slightly changed by the author ). They actually fail, in a way, to take charge of their own lives and they let themselves go. They don’t want to live anymore and they are trying to be better and to find more to life than just routine. He makes the characters sympathetic by giving them everyday problems and struggles, and also by giving them this sort of depression. This makes it seem way more normal than just any other character because these problems aren’t always addressed nowadays. He makes some characters unlikeable by giving them attitude or by showing how little they care about the confusion of the women, for example, one of their husbands just cannot understand and does not even try to. It is a little unconventional for traditional books because it touches on more modern subjects, like depression, anxiety and eating disorders. These subjects were usually considered taboo in earlier novels and stories so this book could be considered unconventional. The book simply shows that we are all going through difficult periods and times in our lives, no matter how famous or how good your life is. It is normal to get hurt, be scared, be lost...

In this book, the author maintains the readers interest by not giving away any information. I am at the beginning so all I know is that there is this teen, named Thomas, he doesn't remember anything about his life. The book starts with him in a container like place and he can feel he is moving up. When he reaches the top he is in a little place surrounded by huge walls. He comes up to many people watching him. He is introduced to everyone learns what happens in this place called the Glade. Later on he learns that he stuck in the middle of the maze and that the walls of the maze are constantly shifting. One specific thing that kept me interested was when one of the others in the Glade says he recognized him. This interested me because no one knew about their past lives and the fact that he is remembering somthing enticed me because in such a confusing environment I wanted some background information.

How does the author of your book maintain readers’ interest?
The author switches between characters’ perspectives so it is not limited to one character. Stroud also added new characters that are entirely different from the original characters in the first book, which helps readers see a different side of the same world(this book takes place in a world with magicians. These magicians are considered high class and important; anyone else who is not "important" should not defy them or they will suffer consequences.) For example, Stroud adds a character who is a commoner (lower ranked than a magician), and like other commoners despises them but are forced to please them and not go against them in any way. On the other hand, for the original characters, one of them is a new magician who wants to prove that he is important and powerful, like all the other magicians. Both of these characters give the readers some insight on both sides of the same world.
