Topic Sentence: There were two main earthquakes. The first quake was caused by movement on the fault lines on the west and for the for the second earthquakes it was the fault lines again but the surface did not crack/break open.
Liquefaction is where the ground shakes and the pressurized water underground comes out of the hole caused by the earthquake.

Supporting Sentence: Before the earthquakes, scientists believed that the shaking of the ground caused the water filled sediment and soil to lose strength which made it behave more like a liquid than a solid.

The scale difference is the first earthquake was a 7.1 and the second earthquake was a 6.3.
I think on the richter scale the reason because the colours are different is because red can be a worse colour or a alarming colour and brown is the opposite and so as the richter scale gets the worse the darker red the colour gets.

Factor two was that the earthquake rupture was very quick so the waves combined and created a large hitting. The last factor was that the fault line was so close to Christchurch so when the fault lines broke they had no time to lose power before they struck Christchurch
