I work on teaching my kids the food groups, how to check pulse/heart rate, what activities get our heart going, how to use a pedometer and then link it to their rate. We discuss bullying, personal hygiene and why it is important, and what foods are good and bad for us. We then will do a plastic food relay race where they must identify the food and what group it goes into before they can take off.

I have several stations set up where students can choose to play different sports/activities. I call them over one group at a time and they measure their heart rate using the item in the link below (its awesome you should get a class set). We put their results on a graph. At then end of class we discuss what activities do or do not get them in their target heart rate zone. They later plan out their week trying to be active for at least an hour, five days a week.

Blake

I want to incorporate a chromebook activity that consists of a food journal for a week. We will discuss diet choices and how exercise helps burn calories. Also, as part of this project, I want them to learn to read food labels. We will concentrate on calories in and calories burned.

I posted the link on the white board and told the students to watch all 3 short videos on the page and then play all the games. It took about 30 minutes. It's an easy way to knock out some nutrition benchmarks on freezing or rainy days
