The Concept-Based lesson that designed and then implemented was for a kindergarten class with the purpose of identifying needs and wants of people and how those have changed over time. Students were introduced to the concept of needs and wants through the reading of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Norma Numeroff. I emphasized each time the mouse wanted something then we discussed whether or not those wants were needs. We then identified the needs of a mouse. We then compared those needs to the needs of a person. From there we created a T-chart of needs and wants. Students help to identify needs and wants typical of themselves. I while making the whole group chart I modeled the thinking process of deciding on a need from a want. We then moved to small group. Students had been learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans of the First Thanksgiving. I build upon that and had students sort wants from need for those people of the past. While sorting we discussed how wants had changed over time and how many of their needs were similar to those of people living today.

When asked why the people from the past needed simple clothing instead of the fancy dress illustrated on one of the need & want cards

Student: “[They] needed those clothes so they could grow their food and hunt.”

Hypothetical Feedback:

This student met the objective. To help this student grow beyond this point I could have asked them to think about even more basic needs the Pilgrims in the illustration had. Did they even need all of those clothing? Do we need all of the clothing that we wear?

I could have also gone in a different direction. I could have said, “You mentioned growing food.
