-Piggy was the smartest of the boys, he thinks logically and offered good ideas. The other boys don't like piggy. Piggy is fat and has glasses.
-Ralph got immediate respect because he is more adult like and was the first to hold a meeting with the conch.
-Jack also got alot of respect because he is agressive and bosses others around.

-I can already tell that the conch has a great significance in the story. I can tell Jack is the antagonist due to the fact that he is agressive and wasn't picked to be the leader. He also bullies piggy and got ralph too stop being nice to piggy as well.

-It shows that humans like to be free even though its sometimes for there own good. Piggy's nickname reveals how humans can often be cruel to each other for being different, and Ralph telling the other boys about Piggy demonstrates how humans often put others down to make themselves look better.

-The conch symbolizes authority and order. It reminds the boys of civilization, and rules.

 

What does Jack‟s behavior in this chapter suggest about him (e.g. his attitude toward killing pigs and hunting the beast, his excitement about the rules and the consequences of violating them, his treatment of Piggy etc.)?  In what way(s) might the behavior of the boys during the meeting 

foreshadow later events?

-Jack is an aggressive character who feels excited of the thought that he can do whatever he wants. As a result he does thing that he knows he could never do with adults around. He is excited to break the rules because there will be no consequences and does the exact opposite of what he knows is right. Due to Jacks character we can tell be may be the antagonist.

What hypocritical irony is there in the boys‟ treatment of Piggy in contrast with their treatment of 

Ralph and Jack?  What does this fact suggest about human nature?

 
-The boys are cruel to piggy and respect Jack and Ralph. This shows that Humans are very quick to judge. The boys chose their leader based on appearance when piggy is obviously the most intelligent straight thinking of the children. They judged piggy because he is fat and looks funny since he wears glasses.

What do the events of these first two chapters reveal about the major themes of the novel?

 

 -The major themes in the first 2 chapters are civilization, rules and orders, power and leadership, and violence. Ralph is chosen to be the leader of all the boys and shows leadership and starts to form a little civilization between the group of boys. Jack shows violence when he wasn't able to kill the pig and got angry about it.

Discuss the change in Jack's personality that is describe at the beginning of the chapter.  What is Jack‟s highest priority, and what does this tell us about him?

-In the beginning of the story, Jack seemed to be a good leader because the other boys respected him. He was aggressive towards piggy but this is normal for kids to bully each other but it wasn't until his priorities changed that Jack stopped being a good leader. Jack prefered to kill and go hunting than to keep the fire going. Had the fire been going they all could have been rescued. This makes Jack irresponsible cruel and he forgets his goal real quick.

How are the all of the boys except Ralph and Simon (and Jack) behaving?  What is Golding telling us 

about human nature?  What important qualities do Ralph, Simon, and Piggy have that the other boys 

seem to lack? 
-The other boys are all slacking off. They are used to not having to do anything and prefer to play than to be productive. There is no consequences to misbehaving so in other words they can do whatever they want. Ralph, Simon, Jack, and Piggy are all leaders that actually want to be saved and don't want to become savages while the other boys couldn't care less.

What is making it difficult for Ralph and Jack to communicate and get along?  Where do you think their differences will lead? 

-I believe they have differences in priorities, Ralphs priorities are to be rescued and make shelters while Jacks priorities are to feel comfortable have fun and eat meat. These priorities lead to differences and since kids (being kids) want to have fun they will most likely go to Jacks side. THese differences will lead to conflict among the two groups

Why do you think Jack and the littluns (and others, probably) have fears about a “beastie,” but Ralph, Simon, and Piggy don't?  What theme does this suggest? 

-Ralph, Simon and Piggy, are used logic and science. They do not fear the beastie because no creature like that exists plus the island is too small for a dangerous animal like a tiger to live on. The littluns aren't mature enough to know what is real and fake and they are superstitious.

Describe the behavior of the boys at the beginning of the chapter.  What thematic significance does 

this scene have?

 
-In the beginning of the story the boys are playing at the beach with the sand. They were scared of being stranded on this island but now they like it. The boys said they feel at home.  This shows the boys innocence but it also shows savagery. The boys now look for their own food and look after themselves, They think of the island as there home and don't think of being saved as much anymore.

Why do the hunters decide to “paint” themselves with clay and charcoal?  What effect does doing 

this have on their behavior, and why? 

 

-Does this “makeup” have any symbolic meaning?
The hunters decided to paint their faces with clay and charcoal because it hides their true identities and it allows them to kill and do bad things with no guilt or remorse. The paint also symbolizes savagery.

How do the hunters behave in response to the success of the hunt, and what is the significance of this behavior?

- When the hunters kill a pig they get really excited, which is understandable because having meat instead of fruits to eat would be the best thing to eat on the island without much food variety. But once the hunters have killed the pig they start chanting, 
"Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood." This chant demonstrates that the hunters like to kill, and that they are more excited about killing than they are about the actual food. This demonstrates how evil humans can be at times.

What do you think will result from the open conflict between Jack and Ralph and from Jack‟s success at getting meat?  What is the significance of the boys‟ reaction to being able to eat meat, and how does this compare to their reaction about having missed a chance to be rescued?

-I believe this conflict will result with a separation of groups and the groups will then be at war with each other. The boys obviously have conflict with each other because they have different priorities. Ralph really wants to be saved while Jack wants to hunt on the island. Because of Ralphs disobedience they failed at a chance to be saved.

Discuss the thematic significance of the title of the chapter.

-The title of chapter 4 is, "Painted Faces and Long Hair".
This title symbolizes that the boys have already started to turn into savages. There hair is long because they are unable to cut it and they paint their faces to hide from their identity. They are able to do things and feel no guilt with there faces painted.
