This federal policy required students between the ages of 3-18 with a disability a free and appropriate education. These safeguards not only protect parental access to information about placement, but it also helps resolve disagreements between parents and schools involving a child.&nbsp;<br><br>Under the safeguards, parents have the right to:&nbsp;<br><br></div><ul><li>&nbsp;review all educational records pertaining to their child</li><li>receive notice prior to meetings about their child’s evaluation, placement, or identification,&nbsp;</li><li>to obtain an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) for consideration at such meetings.</li></ul><div><br>Parents also to have the right to request mediation or a due process hearings if a disagreement arises.
