Caliph-
The chief Muslim civil and religious ruler, regarded as the successor of Muhammad. The Caliph ruled in Baghdad until 1258 and then in Egypt until ottoman conquest of 1517; the title was then held by the ottoman sultans until it was abolished in 1924 by Ataturk.

Sultan-
A Muslim sovereign

Sovereign-
• A king, queen, or other supreme ruler.
• A person who has supreme power or authority.
• A group or body of persons or a state having sovereign authority.

Umma-
• The whole community of Muslims bound together by ties of religion.
Theocracy-
• A government or state in which god is the supreme ruler, and religious officials govern in God’s name.

Empire-
• An extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority, formerly especially an emperor or empress.
Abu Bakr-
• First Muslim caliph following Muhammad’s death
• Known as “the truthful”
• His reign lasted 2 years, 2 months, and 4 days ending with his death

Umayyad rule-
• 2nd of 4 major caliphates after the dead of Muhammad
• It was centered on the Emayyad dynasty

Baghdad-
• Capital of Iraq
• Largest city of the Middle Ages
• Largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258

100 CE- Islam continues to spread through the continent of Africa, including Nigeria.

After Muhammad's death, the government was led by his key companions, who became the first four caliphs, and wielded religious and political authority based on their close relationship with Muhammad.
