In his speech he is apologizing about his oppression, however he can see it is too late, and his kingdom is falling. The main theme is that oppression never lasts forever. The songwriter appeals to the listeners through emotion as you can hear the somber tones of Louis the XVI, as he talks about his kingdom falling. The songwriter also uses evocative description when he says “sweep the streets I used to roam,” and “I discovered that my castles stand upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand.”. These quotes describe what Louis the XVI is feeling, while talking through his last speech. This song connects to culture as rebellion, and freeing oneself from its oppressor is a common theme in history. For example, the revolutionary war, and the Mexican War of Independence. Not only is it a common theme in history, but it is also a societal trend nowadays. Everybody wants to be different nowadays, and it is trendy to rebel against your parents. It was a song I have grown up with, as my parents used to listen to this music a lot when I was a kid. I think the main reason I like this song so much is that although it is sort of sad, I have great imagery when listening to the song every time. I definitely agree with what Coldplay says in the song, I also agree with his stereotype towards governments with few people ruling. Furthermore, I think that oppressive forces will always get overthrown eventually. I think that the message is very effective to someone who is either listening just for historical reasons, or for enjoyment. The song coveys the message about how terrible oppression can be, and its effects on the people. The song also tells others how to spot oppression, and that everyone should take responsibility for their actions no matter what. I think this music appeals to some people, but not all people, as the song is sort of sad. In general, I do not really like sad music, however really love this song in particular. I could also see how others think the song is too fast, or too sad for them to listen to. The only personal connection I have to this song is just that I have listened to it for as long as I could remember.
