is the exact position of an object or place in spatial coordinates or a grid
system. Absolute Location of Cameroon: 12ºE, 5ºN

-
Relative location is the position of a
place or activity in relation to other places or activities. Relative Location
of Cameroon: Cameroon is located in Central Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. It is
bordered by Chad on the north, the Central African Republic on the east, the
Republic of the Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea to the south and Nigeria to

Site:

Site is the physical character of a place, described by
local relief, landforms and other physical characteristics. Cameroon is located
in Central Africa and has plains in the north, mountains in the northwest,
coastal plains in the southwest, rainforests in the south and central sections
of the country and plateaus in the center and east. Cameroon is also located on
the Gulf of Guinea, a part of the Atlantic Ocean, and has many rivers such as
the Sanaga, the Wouri and the Mungo passing through it. The climate is tropical
on the coast and south and gets hotter and more arid the further north you go.

Situation:

Situation is the relative location of a place in relation to
the physical and cultural characteristics of the larger region or spatial
system of which it is a part. Cameroon is south of the Sahel, a region that is
becoming drier and less farmable as the years pass and may eventually expand to
Cameroon’s north. Cameroon’s location on the Gulf of Guinea has allowed it to
easily export goods by boat, particularly to countries such as Spain, the
United Kingdom, France, Italy and South Korea. Cameroon’s position on the
eastern Atlantic Ocean also allows it to import goods to the country without
having to transport them over land, as landlocked African nations have to do. Cameroon
is located around the center of Africa, which provides good access to natural
resources such as oil, copper, iron ore, rice, wheat, cotton and corn located
in nearby African countries.

Human-Environment Interaction:

-
Human environment interaction is the
relationship between the people and their environment. An example of
human-environment interaction in Cameroon is the houses that people build
there. Many of them are made out of wood, which humans got from their environment
(rainforests).

Region:

-
Formal Region: A formal region is an area
in which everyone shares in one of more characteristics. Cameroon is in the formal
region of Central Africa.

-
Functional Region: A functional region
is an area organized around a node or focal point. An example of a functional region
in Cameroon would be the intercity bus services that function from where the
company headquarters are (node) to a certain city where the buses turn around
and come back (end of the functional region).

Movement:

Movement refers to the way people move and the way
that information gets from one place to another. In Cameroon, intercity bus
services (buses that travel from one city to another) run by private companies
are the main form of movement within the country. Few cars travel the country
as roads are poorly maintained and robbery is common among these roads. The
second-most popular form of movement is through the railroad service called
Camrail.  Information gets around mostly
via telephone, telegraph, television and radio. However, over the past decade
there has been a significant increase in the number of people that use cell
phones and the Internet.

Cartogram of Cameroon: A cartogram is a map that has
been simplified to present a single idea in a diagrammatic way; the base is not
normally true to scale. This map is telling us where most of the population of
Cameroon is located (based on cities). Based on this map, you can see that
Yaoundé and Doula are the cities with the largest populations.

the map.) A proportional symbol map is a thematic map in which the size of the
symbol varies in proportion to the frequency or intensity of the mapped
variable. The symbols on this map represent the amount of people there are per
square kilometer, with the smallest dots having the least amount of people per
square kilometer and the largest dots having the largest amount of people per

 Cameroon’s
Lobeke National Rainforest, a part of the Congo Basin rainforest, the 2nd
largest rainforest in the world, is facing the threat that many rainforests
nowadays face - poaching and deforestation. The forest, home to many unique
plant and animal species, is also the home to over 150 indigenous groups. The
Eco Guard, a group of conservationists and park rangers, are patrolling the
forest in efforts to stop the poaching and control logging. The World Wildlife
Foundation is doing its best to ensure that companies only cut down trees in
designated areas. Hopefully, their efforts will ensure that the forest stays
around for a long time.

This current event relates to Unit 1 in several
ways. It is often included in the relative location of Cameroon, as one might
say “Cameroon is located in Central Africa in the Congo Basin rainforest.” The
Congo Basin rainforest can also be included when describing Cameroon’s site and
situation; you can say that Cameroon is partially located on the Congo Basin
(site) or that Cameroon is situated on the Congo Basin, where it gets some of
its resources from (situation). This article also relates to the unit in that
it shows the human-environment interaction in this part of Cameroon. The
indigenous tribes preserve the forest and get materials they need from it in
order to survive and certain companies in Cameroon cut down the forest for
building houses and buildings, or for selling the wood to other countries. The
Congo Basin rainforest is also part of the region of Central Africa and is a
physical attribute of Cameroon. The rainforest also can be associated with the
movement of the people in Cameroon because its denseness impedes much movement
of people and the construction of roads in the area.
