Having talked with some of the participants, my own ideas and definitions of social media have been stretched, and I think that I have learned that it is important to come to the same collective working definition of "social media" if we are ever to enable the free flow of communications in a place that are also guided by healthy boundaries. I think I am learning that as we make space to talk more about how we define "social media," those definitions of the word "social media" will naturally become apparent and fleshed out, along with the freedoms and boundaries helping liberate and govern them, too!

I wasn't able to interview students this week as I'm not currently teaching any students! However, I think any time that you are asking students for their opinions in this way it can be very motivational to students. Showing that you are interested in, value, and respect their ideas and opinions (particularly as this relates to student choice in the classroom) can be a big source of motivation and encouragement for students.

This is the questions my students asked me after our discussion on technology and social media.
I had taken this opportunity to have a discussion first and then some of the students submitted a written response.
It was interesting to know how they view technology and social media as something essential and how it's a connection with the outside world. Many of my students come from very religious and traditional families and technology gives them an access to a free world. It widens their world view. They follow Instagram influencers, fashions, Bollywood and also attend classes on their smart phones! Some of them sheepishly did admit that it's a distraction.

Also, it was interesting to know different points of view and honestly I did not expect students, even though they love technology and social media, would be so aware of the negative effects this might have in their daily lives. I will definitely use these type of reflection questions with all the students I have in order to raise awareness about these topics related to virtuality.

After interviewed three students of my online class, I have learned that my students have something in common and different for using social media. Something in common my students have could be using social media to learn English and connections while they also have other differences in using social media options. During my interview, I found that some students tried to ask me some choices for them but I denied to do so because I needed to get real information from them. From here, I inferred that this activity encouraged them to consider if their idea or performance is a common practice in their community. Thus, I asked them to provide most sincere information as possible in order to motivate metacognitive skills in using technology and social media.

I would start the lesson on science and technology by asking my students to vote on any social media poll platform such as Nearpod or Mentimeter or VK about using technology as well as good or bad things that technology does to people. I believe it could be the introduction to the topic. Another idea is to sum up the topic at the final lesson of a number of lessons devoted to the topic,as the deduction, which would make students reflect on the disadvantages or advantages of technology.

They love sharing ideas and enjoy hearing solution to their challenges from other teachers. I asked them to find similarities and differences of what they had mentioned so they could come up with a plethora of new ideas. I guess Ali mentioned humans always seek opportunities to share opinions and feel free to have the choice they would like to have.
As an educator, I would like to make sure that we discuss the problems we have with social media and share the different strategies available to sort them out.

Interviews with students gave a start to the discussion about the usage of social media and digital devices. It is so interesting how differently we perceive the existence of social media. For my students using social media is something they cannot imagine their lives without, for me it is something that wasn’t common when I was a teenager. Although my students are growing up with social media, they are not always aware of the dangers they may bring.
The initial questions may become a great start for the lesson about pros and cons of using social media in everyday life. During the follow-up activities we would discuss not only the negative sides of social media but also the goals they help to achieve. For example, lots of well-paid professions didn’t exist a few years ago but now they bring happiness and career development to people all over the world (e.g. social media manager, content manager, digital marketing manager and others). Moreover, it is easier now to become successful because you can promote yourself with the help of social media. I believe that this topic will be of great interest and help students to develop critical thinking skills.

I mean, my students design a survey about a specific topic and then they share it with school peers and people with their same age to get insights about those topics. After that, they have to report their findings and draw conclusions based on the results. It's really meaningful for the students because they are throughout process of creating knowledge and facts regarding problems or opinions of others teens.

An activity like this not only fosters critical thinking among the students but it also allows the students to voice their own opinions and "be heard". I consider it to be pivotal in a class since it's important that we take into account the perspectives of our students about a certain issue. Not only does it permit them to hone their speaking skills, it also empowers them to voice their views and learn from their peers.

Talking about this topic is always interesting, specially because sometimes students aren't consious about this topics and how they inform and teach each other about it. Also is a good chance to talk about selfconfidence because they depend a lot of what they see in social media. I consider this topic an excelent tool to teach about technology but also values and good behaivor.
-Alejandra Dubon.

I have asked few students about their opinions. It is great to hear their thought on that topic. It help me actually understand them better. I notice that some of them really glued to the social media where as they are some of them who don't. That answered my question why some of them did not really join the online class. I need to find out the best solution to this problem.- Hasilah-

This was a golden opportunity to get to know my students better. From these exchanges, we can become closer to them. To be a source of inspiration for them to learn more English, I have to make my students like me first before they like the subject I teach. That is why I make it a point to keep a notebook of things I observe in class and whenever I have a chance to chat with them, i would listen to their stories often prompted by the 'right' question. After the interview, both students would sheepishly admit they are trying hard to reduce their device contact time heeding my advice.

This kind of activity is useful and can be adapted as a speaking exercise minus evaluation. The information exchange make us better teachers because we get to find out their likes and dislikes. That will assist us in planning more interesting lessons. For example, the girl who loves Tik Tok discloses that all her girlfriends in the class are passionate about Tik Tok and create video regularly to entertain friends and families. Finding that out, I have started exploring the platform in the hope of creating one Tik Tok video together with the class incorporating content of their English lessons. We will start with "Shame on you cyberbullies!"
