The reason why Miss Maudie was laughing was because on page 91, when Scout overheard Atticus and Maudie talking about the snowman they made, calling it a "morphodite" (Lee 91). This was actually a hermaphrodite, an organism possessing reproductive organs of both male and female sexes, and was misheard. Maudie's flowers, especially the azaleas, represent many things in the story. They represent the good in the community, and Maudie, who does not discriminate against any color of flower, is evidence of that. Even though those foot-washers told her garden to go to hell, and indeed it did, as it burned down, but Maudie, undeterred, just went to grow new flowers in a smaller space.
