If you live in a place where earthquakes occur often, it is a good idea to make sure your house is "earthquake proof".
- Make sure that there are ways to turn off the gas in your home. If an earthquake happens, the sparks from falling buildings could create a fire if gas is in the air.
- Anchor all objects to the wall, such as electronic devices, book cases, cabinets or anything that could fall on you, especially above your bed because an earthquake can occur at anytime.
- Apply safety film to windows and glass door. An earthquake could cause the glass to shatter, which could injure you.

After an earthquake, you must be extremely cautious because although the earthquake is over, it is still very dangerous.
Here is what you should do:
-Check yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid if you can/ if it is needed.
- Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas, open all windows, leave the house and report it to the authorities. Turn off the gas.
- Stay away from damaged buildings and watch out for broken glass or debris. Wear study boots or shoes to prevent cutting your feet.
- Stay away from beaches. Tsunamis could still occur.
- Expect aftershocks.
- If you are at school or work, follow the emergency plan or instructions from the person in charge.
